Really really really slow driving.....
Discussion
Now, as usual on a certain road in my area, the world's collection of old fogies who shortly are to die decide they are not in a hurry, and so drive along at 25mph. Shame it was a national limit... They created a tail back a mile long, and I watched a couple of people totally lose patience and exercise flamin' dangerous overtaking.
Is there anything that can be done about these old people? I thought it was an offence, obstruction of the highway or similar, to drive so slowly ?
TBH what REALLY got my goat was the old sod managed to increase his speed when he crawled into the 30mph limit and pulled away from me !!

Smacks at the offence under S 3 Road Traffic Act 1988 - driving a motor vehicle on a road without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road (the second leg of due care).
You would need a string of witnesses held up unable to overtake etc.
At the end of which if case was taken to Court trying to get an unsympatheic judgement
from the Bench.
Similar offence tried at Harrogate MC couple of years ago when local farmer competing in the Nation Farmers Hold Up Traffic Longest Tail back event for a number of miles and large tail back. Case dismissed.
Speak to local Plod if it is regular occurrence and a danger you seem to be making out. Maybe eyesight offence which could be taken to Court and test made to be passed - I believe they have the power to do so. (too tired to research at the mom)
BUT remember even thee will be old one day......

One of the guys who posts on the Lotus forum calls 'em Octoganarian formation driving teams. Nose to tail, no room to overtake and speed maintained regardless of limits and (more importantly) conditions. Always amuses me when they flash you if you DARE to overtake one of them. (I did suggest to one old boy that he had faulty headlights after such an incident - I'm sure I saw steam coming out of his ears)

There ist a case going on.. in Shropshire I think. Some cyclist ist being prosecuted for riding at some pace down a hill in an NSL. But even though the rider was fastish - drivers overtook und straddled the double white lines or something. Ist a bit of a rumpus because the policeman who saw this decided to prosecute the rider for being inconsiderate und not the drivers who broke rule of double white/10mph rule.
I think ist still to appear before the beak.. Have not heard of outcome in the mag which reported this. Und the mag.. major cycling rags

Im against exessive speeding and all that was in Devon the other day and my god it was like national go slow day. Try 20 mph in a 40, also in a 30 zone some old biddy refused to go past about 18 or 19, then she pulled over when my mate pretty much parked on her boot and lent on the horn, even though she was in the wrong, on an open road it was there was no excuse for slow speeds like that.

there was case in scotland not so long ago, where a biddy was either done or warned about slow driving
she was interviewd on five live and obviously denied it

And I remember in Norfolk a few years back, an older person was prosecuted for driving too slow in a 60mph zone.
A senior Norfolk policemen said that nobody should be doing less than 45mph in a 60mph zone.

They're the worst of the lot!, 45 in a 60 zone ?
Surely nobody should be doing less than 60 in a 60 zone,if safe to do so,which it normally is,as it's got a 60 limit ?!!
Of course - and if you're old enough - get past oldie , then drive at 15mph, holding him up , brake for imaginery hazards, change down at every oppertunity so as not to leave brake lights - stop when you've got an excuse that road is not quite wide enough -be over courtesy let people through that don't have right of way - generally piss him off - i do ,then i'm almost 60 , can crack on when i want to , but can be an awkward sod when i meet one of thes bad adverts to us old drivers.(And i love doing it untill my wife gets peed off and shouts - "where's the funeral"
OOH - I LOVE BEING OLD

Exemplary stanards from your mate in response there.

What about if I use my Camera to take video footage of the 25-30mph driving in the national? And downloaded it for the local police?
Could I politely stop them (if I can, most don't appear to recognise other vehicles on the road) and advise them they are committing an offence? And are presenting a danger to other road users?
It is also a problem in that the roads have very few points where I would feel safe overtaking in the Chimaera, yet people in seriously slow cars pull over and give it a go, I don't know if they have a Crystal ball or what to see round the corner but I don't want to ever see a head-on collision !!
If I ever start driving so slowly that I cause huge tailbacks (ok, I do now by driving at 30 in the long stretches of 30 we have around here) then quite frankly my reactions won't be good enough for driving safely and I will I think/hope take myself off the road.

If you guys want to know what slow driving and really warped mentality is about, come up to the Highlands in mid summer and sit hour after hour, mile after mile behind the singularly most inconsiderate, selfish morons you will ever have the displeasure to encounter.
When I lived in the beautiful Isle of Skye, I did everything in my power to have the police and the local authorities implement some sort of policy to change.
They have put up speed cameras!

Was up in Scotland earlier this year on the way to Inverness up the A9. Must admit I was very pleased with the ability of almost all motorists to crack on and keep it going including overtaking trucks and slower stuff. Think it was early March (there was snow on the hills) so probably still locals.

We have exactly the same mentality here in the Forest of Dean - I'd say some of these tourists drive dangerously slow in some areas, and too fast in others (sheep on the roads in certain areas)
