M1 north is being widened to 4 lanes around Sheffield. The absolute lunacy occurring at the moment is the new lane layouts. The existing three lanes are being shifted 1 1/3 lanes out by the means of yellow squares (but without removing the existing white lines or cats eyes). This puts the fear of god in me, I know where I should be driving after using it all week, but so many others are not so sure, some follow the white, some follow the yellows, some drive straight on, some drive everywhere. This will cause a serious accident, is this planned or just ineptly executed.

Anyone else experiencing this.

I had exactly this problem today, joining the M1 I didn't know if I should be inbetween the white lines, or the yellow dots! The lane markings were appauling, and no signage to indicate what to do on the slip road. Took me a few moments, the only way I knew for certain is when the line of cones finished 'moving across the lanes' so I could see where I should have been.

Utterly stupid.

They usually black out the white lines with paint, but this wears off after several weeks and the white is visible again. It seems they're too incompetent to check that the lane structure is clear and obvious.

I saw many a near miss during the many months of the M5 widening. Most cars follow the yellow hi-vis cats eyes, but it's actually easier to see and mistakenly follow the white lane markings when the sun is in your horizon.

I guess the engineers don't care because they know they have temporary Gatsos to keep the workforce safe... yeah right, this kind of basic mistake makes a mockery of any speed limits in force.

Yeah I noticed this yesterday. The sun was shining and I really couldn't see those pathetic temporary lane dividers! I almost went with the normal lines.

I've just been on this section of road - there are signs up saying "Use the hard shoulder" but the sold whites are still painted - not a single car was on the hard shoulder or outside lane, we all made a nice neat 50mph line down the centre of the road.

And hard luck to the poor bugger who got flashed on the other side by the evil scamera - he wasn't going that fast either.

Until its over I'll be getting off at 31 and back on at 34 if needed.

In their infinite wisdom the powers that be are also doing roadworks on the road from Coisley Hill in Woodhouse up to the Parkway,so it looks like you'll be going through the delights of Handsworth if you get off at 31 (or sit in the queue through Whiston) some choice eh?

Whats wrong with off at J31, Aston cut acroos to Aughton then Treeton, catcliffe and onto Brinsworth road to J34? or even up past Kimberworth to J35?

Are there no queues through Catcliffe?

Probably are but you have options having turned right out of Treeton lane.

SO onto Whitehill Lane to join up with Bawtry Road by the bridge.
Or left onto Brinsworth Road>Bonet Ln again to join up with Bawtry Road.
Through Brinsworh estates even
or left out of treeton Ln Up onto parkway, city inbound/outbound/ or even by airport and traffic plod hq depending on where you going is my opinion.

Dont worry about the lanes not being marked properly, there are 'safety cameras' installed in the road works, so its all nice and safe - honest.

There haven't been any queues through Catcliffe when I've been going through but the road works in the centre of the city (towards the Wicker) mean that I'm queuing at 7am to get out!!!

Still, it'll be fun when there's 4 lanes to choose from. Could we lobby to have the 4th. lane as TVR only?
