Involved in accident at weekend, advice please
Discussion
Morning,
On Sat afternoon somebody ran into the back of my car and drove off, I was in the front passinger seat (friend was driving and he is insured) I had an attack of hayfever and didnt want to drive myself.
The chap who hit us waited for me to get out and then drove off He refused to pull over. Because traffic was fairly heavy he didnt get very far before we cought up to him.
As soon as I got into the car I called the police, gave them a running commantery of out location. They joined us after a few miles and the chap quickly pulled over. I would also like to say a big thanks to the police chaps involved.
There is not a lot of damage to my car, Bumper needs painting and a few scratches filling in and so on.
We were stationary about to move away from the roundabout when he hit. I was not driving and I think my mate had just released the brakes in preperation to move when he hit us hence not a great deal of damage. Also the E39 bumpers are mounted on shock absorbers to absorb impact and reduce damage
I want my car repairing, I have been given his details through the police
My question is what if he deny's hitting my car to his insurers, Were do I stand getting it repaired through his insurance? We did not have time to get any witnesses as we had to follow him down the motorway after impact.
Thanks

Damned lucky that the Police were up for helping you. In a similar situation, I have had the Police refuse to turn out ('It's a civil matter, sir.')
Don't know what would happen if he denied hitting you. I'd be reporting it to your insurance company and seeing what he has to say. I guess that pold didn't see it happen, as you say they caught up with you a couple of miles later.
What did he say when the Police stopped him?
AS a side note, expect something very iffy to be going on with him - either the car won't be correctly registered (if you got the supposed RK's address from the Police, it may well not be heard of there), or he is uninsured, or a failed asylum seeker (they make up 1% of our population), or worse.
Oli.

What did the police say to you? Are they charging him with Undue Care or anything? Failing to stop? If not, I would demand that they do.
If he hits you up the back and is insured, AFAIK it is automatically his fault, highway code says keep distance in order to stop etc... and he didn't do that... SO if he has a real insurance policy (which I doubt for him to drive off) then you will be ok..

I "think" the reason he drove off is becasue he wasnt from my area. He may have been here on business or visiting. I bet he thought if i get on the motorway they will give up after a few miles.
the police said he was insured, I thought they can check things like that? If it was not a genuine car and details the should not have let him drive away?????

Sorry to hear about the incident. If you've got his insurance details a claim can be presented to his insurers and they can be forced to deal with it whether he reports the claim or not. I'm running similar claims at the moment for other PHers. Basically, they (his insurers) will give him opportunity to reply failing which more often than not they will deal on a best terms basis. It may take a while but a result should be achieved in the end. Should they decide not to deal on a best terms basis, they may require an unsatisfied judgement against their policyholder before dealing with it. Either way, you don't need to claim from your insurance and lose your no claims bonus.
