Having seen V for Vendetta recently it set me thinking.

Does anyone else think we, as a country, are heading for existence in a society of similar design?

Are we there already?

Has our Government already set our feet on the path to V with recent and pending legislation?

Vonhosen, in your unwavering opinion of obedience to the written word of the law. What are your views on the subject?

What about other BiB's?

Have you ever been quietly alarmed about police powers being introduced or proposed, and feared they may 'evolve' further down the line as covert measures to control the populace in a truly Orwellian way?

Once the Terrorism Acts were used against an old man who was exercising his right of free speech in a Labour Conference, I figured the country was doomed.

Utterly fabulous film!

And a lot of the sentiment rings true in these troubled times, but bear in mind it was originally written during (and about) the Thatcher era.

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant; vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honour to meet you and you may call me V.

To be honest I think it's more like Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil' than 'V for Vendetta' - still not a societal development that I care for mind.

"But wait! It is to Madame Justice that i dedicate this concerto, in honour of the holiday that she seems to have taken from these parts, and in recognition of the imposter that stands in her stead......"

Cue music and a very large explosion.....

Great film!

The strange thing for me is:

1. The government is becoming super controlling over its citizens
2. Citizens hate it, which causes V to stand up against it by almost becoming a "terrorist" - setting off bombs etc

Now compare that to our current climate:

1. We have terrorists (or so we believe anyway)
2. The goverment is becoming more controlling of their citizens because of these terrorists
3. Err.. where will that lead? You don't suppose, to the creation of more "terrorists" (who probably won't be nearly as careful as V is about what they blow up)?!

I think proper policework rather than treating everybody like a criminal/number/statistic should be the way forward.

Not seen the film yet but I read the comic book on which it was based at the weekend - to prepare myself. One telling panel on the front page has a camera and the sign 'For your protection' underneath it. Yes indeed.

I visit London a fair bit and am constantly amazed at the number of signs telling you what you can't do, cameras watching you and security guards (in a small outlet of Bodyshop for goodness sake!). All depresing. It's lovely to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

I spent a week in Rome last month - very few cameras, none of those stupid railings to herd people off the roads either. I only realised when I came back that I hadn't seen any. What you do get is bored looking policemen with guns standing around smoking and chatting to the locals and looking cool. I know which I prefer (although possibly without the Berettas).

Unfortunately, its probably the Berettas that means they are bored.

Spot on about Brazil. V for Vendetta post-dated a supposed 'incident' created by the government to instill fear and panic into the population. For this country to follow suit, the government would have to engineer the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people - I can't quite see that happening tbh.
