and also with regard to towing trailers...

"All drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 retain their existing entitlement to tow trailers until their licence expires. This means they are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM. They also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kgs MAM."

What does "licence expires" mean? Is that the 10 years photocard licence expiry or the previous one when I had my old licence?

Purely for that reason AFAIK.

prob not that much different it only being a 21.7% increase in my age!!!

I guess I am more concerned with whether any things will change at that point (such as entitlement to drive trailers as in my second post) rather than just the renewal.

nah, the card/paper expires, but your entitlement lasts until you are 70 (i think)

the dvla site (leaflet ins115) does not seem to say what the fee is. It only says that the renewal at 70 is free.

What's the point of it come to that. I lost my paper bit and it earnt me an extra 2 points. Presented my insurance, MOT and photocard to plod at the station for a producer and they couldn't accept the photocard as proof. Got me 3 points + 2 extra for losing the bit of paper + 50 quid on top made payable to a Mr Gordon Brown & Co Ltd. Still, it should go towards funding a PC for them to look up details in the future.

No. It will make a (very small) contribution to the cost of a new logo for your local force. (SOCA spent over £100,000 on their new - and ridiculous - logo, enough for a few more PCs.) - Streaky

They certainly know how to waste cash on daftness.

Und Jools - did the producer say you had to include the bit of paper? Would have thought the photocard was sufficient wnough to contact DVLA to check up on endorsements. After all "Traffic Cops" are full of being able to get licence details via "control office"

Ist all an excuse for "them" whoever they are to control you! rolleyes ranting

Just remember that when you do renew before you send it off check out the DVLA website very carefully. Depending upon age and vehicle classes eg typically car driver with entitlement to C1 D1 or even C1+E D1+E you have to include a medical statement form to keep your entitlements.

In fact, before you send ANYTHING to the DVLA, make sure you make a copy of it, preferably a sworn copy - as they have a nasty habit of "losing" entitlements, and then the onus is on the "customer" to prove they had the entitlement in the first place, tricky when you don't have your old license!

I can't say for sure but I don't think it stated that it was both parts. I would have thought it was enough proof for the purpose of the producer but evidently not. I was stopped by unmarked TrafPol so I'm sure he too would have ANPR'd and checked too. Ist sehr stupid Wildy

If you are required to produce your driving licence it's both parts or it's a failure to produce.

What is the point of a producer? Specifically, what are the police trying to prove? In my mind it's there to prove that you are who you say you are and the car has the correct documentation. Since my "offence" was driving above the limit, the DVLA would have got involved anyway, they had the information available to re-produce my licence with points included. It all seemed a bit pathetic to me that I got an extra 2 points for losing a poxy bit of paper when the information was available elsewhere. The DVLA couldn't get the replacement docs to me within 7 days.

The very fact that you need both parts of the Driving Licence for it to be an actual licence is damning proof that the photocard part is nothing more than an identity card by the back door.

EU directives.
They are working towards a single type licence for all EU nations (& no doubt with it will come harmonisation on the endorsements system, both with the level of endorsement for each offence & that they'll count where ever they are commited in the EU).

And the fact that many EU member states already have Photo ID will have had bearing on that too, undoubtedly.

The fact still remains that by having the Photocard part of the Driving Licence as being inadmissible of proof of entitlement to drive, it has no purpose other than as a Photo ID.

You can't really argue with my logic there.
