Genius.

A device that could potentially revolutionise metropolitan travel and we are too short sighted to see its use.

More buses, thats what we need more buses rolleyes

My reply to the story.

"Why is the Government so intent on making us use antiquated, dangerous, polluting and congestion generating transport in the form of buses and not looking into ways that a proposal like the segway can be integrated into city centre travel?"

I am not sure if segways are a great idea, they are expensive and lack security, where do you park it when you go to a shop? but it certainly is a good attempt at offering something that looks forward. Would it not be better to have segway lanes than bus lanes?

Don't get this... I'd have thought it'd be possible to classify them as an electric bicycle and use them like one. Who says the wheels have to be one behind the other...? Or does this fall down because they don't have pedals?

Loony Left strikes again mad

This would have been a good device to allow people to carry on a train, and use at the other end where no buses serve your intended destination.

The government want us to use public transport, but keep stopping us from making it worthwhile when you have a 45 minute walk each end where public transport does not serve!

the bbc has as yet not put up my response. Is this because I criticised buses I wonder?
Will give it 24hours and then inquire.

Doubt it mate. On a good surface they rocket along. I've seen them used in airports, believe me they're bloody quick

I did! I rented one twice from www.segway.la/rental.php

It was so much fun, but the trouble is you look a bit of a twit when you're on the road/pavement. They're fun in a park. Much faster than I thought it would be.

I/we have one at work, the only one in Australia at the time since they are banned here too. We use it as a special mobility autonomous platform.. it's quite fun, and you do get used to its self-balancing within a few seconds but if you crash into say, a kerb, you're going to fall face down flat on the ground with a lot of force, and your legs are positioned in a way that makes it hard to save yourself.

Not great IMHO. The wheelchair was better.

It's pedal cycles in law, not bicycles. This has no pedals.

The Highways Act isn't being dug up just for this, it's used daily.
It's the legislation that still defines the highway & is used if cars or pedal cycles etc drive on the footway.

Ah flat out 12.5mph, ie 4.8 minute mile so I might out sprint one for a bit then. Especially if I run up/down stairs.

Same reason I could never figure out why people found the Daleks so scary. hehe

Even old TB has one... He must be thinking now "What am I to do with that thing in the corner". and CB replies "could make a hat stand out of it"

"The Segway scooter, of the type George W Bush took a tumble on two years ago, was presented to the prime minister [Tony Blair] by the King of Jordan, "
