More parking ticket queries

Mate got a ticket because he filled in his permit incorrectly (has to do it daily, put the date in as the previous day by mistake).
I'm thinking ask for it to be dropped, they will comply, but if they upheld it and he refused to pay, it would never stand up, would it?

My thoughts were that if the police don't need to get all the details right to convict someone (as mentioned here many times with regards to NIPs and errors in spelling, etc) then surely the reverse should also be true?
