Interesting on Thursday night when there was a breakdown in the contraflow (specs controlled) near Luton causing huge tailbacks...........

Once past the obstruction there were three types of driver...

1. Some held it at 40mph all the way to the end.

2. Realising the scameras read average speed, most disappeared at high velocity to the next camera.

3. The real idiots followed (2) above, but missed the intermediate camera and zoomd off out the other end! Wonder if they will get tagged for "best sector time" lol

Specs records the first and second speed readings so won’t the people zooming through thinking the increased time will counteract speeding through the secondary camera get a NIP?

There seem to be plenty of regulars who know where the cameras are and speed up when they're past the last camera that will see them, especially people who join or leave in the middle. I guess there must be people who see them go past and think that must be safe then. And there are *still* people who slow down for the cameras and then zoom off again ... hehe

So you should see the specs zone in sections and drive accordingly then.

And get up behind the biggest lorry you can as you go past the camera.

The specs on the A52 between Nottingham and Bingham are fun. Blast past the 1st camera as fast as you want, then pull into the Little Chef for a pee. Blast past the 2nd camera, but instead of continuing on the A52 and bypassing Radcliffe on Trent, you turn off and drive through the village nice & slow, missing the 3rd camera and bringing your average down too. Then you exit ROT and hoof it past the 4th camera and on past the prison. Yee ha!

How bloody irresponsible BG hehe

Mind you all of the theories are based on the use of the cameras (if there are any cameras at all) in consecutive pairs.

What if they are not?

Having been held up passing one camera gantry at speed may well be 'safe' unless they are also being used for cctv coverage. But passing two may be in the territory of risk preferrers.

Unless on a bike.

The truck (or coach) idea has some merit at least until the 'tailgate cameras' are implemented. Now that should be fun.

I can confirm that specs cameras are a load of old bollox.

I wont tell you how i know theyre a load of old bollox, but i will tell you that they are most definitely a complete load of bollox, especially when the vehicle being driven has A) no reg number or B) the wrong reg number.
See, total BOLLOX! nuts

Or is it thrown out by ANPR/ SPECS etc.

Specs doesn't record any speed readings - it merely says you were passing camera one at that time, and passing camera 2 at that time, and then it works out that to cover that distance in that time, you must have been doing an average of x miles per hour.

There's a 4th type. The middle/outer lane morons who travel at 35 with the inner lane(s) empty.
A great shame they don't start enforcing the highway code, really. You might as well throw it away cos nobody bothers to drive to it any more!

Or just go through Colwick, join the A46 at the roundabout and cut out that whole stretch of road that is both dangerous and a total PITA.

On another note, it would appear that SPECS is unable to make out a twisted number plate. For example, if one screw is too high, the other too low and they are just a little too close together. While passing an MOT and being perfectly legal to the naked eye it appears SPECS has issues reading it.

Shame, that.

I know from a friend working on petrol station ANPR systems that it had problems with plates with no black boarders which many modern plated have, and would also go for the number plates that truckers make up with their names on. If you covered a car with yellow reflective backing on the front, white on the back, and used unboardered plates i'm hoping it'll confuse the hell out of ANPR

Speaking of which it appears that SPECS is appearing on the M25/A2 area near the dartford tunnel. It arrived last week but only around the A2 junction and I dont know how far down it goes.

Thing to remember with specs is that if it flags an unreadable plate itll have an operator view it, so if your plate is present and readable, youll still get the ticket.

Best to remove it altogether id say, then theyre f@cked...

Interesting point that... What is the penalty for not displaying a reg plate?

James Bond style rotating plates.......spin it round for one camera and then back just after passing. Then you are only displaying the dodgy plate for a few seconds.

How do they cope with the non reflective black and white plates as found on older vehicles?
