Handguns and Pistols for Self Defence
Discussion
Personally I believe I should be allowed to carry a Hand gun for my own personal protection
looking at recent news stories, its now become pretty dangerous to even go out of your house nowadays, what with Terrorist threats murdering burglars and Hijackers, Muggers and Chavs
imagine just innocently walking to work along the street and a nutter with a gun approaches you!, how on earth can you defend yourself?
on the other hand if you had a legaly obtained gun...........BANG, end of problem, you safe, he Dead
what do you think?

Because the moment we are allowed to carry guns we'll end up like the US...
Hundreds of deaths every month through handguns - and not just criminals, but kids, drunken rows - imagine some of the road rage idiots on the roads if they had a gun close to hand... it'd be bloodshed...
as for preventing crimes - come on - if everyone has a gun do you think that'll make criminals more or less likely to shoot first, rob later?

Problem is that for every person who might be competent to carry a handgun, you'll get a dozen up-standing, law-abiding, plonkers handling them incompetently causing accidents. Also otherwise-completely-sane-and-decent-bloke Joe Bloggs might just happen to come home and find his wife in the sack with the postman leading to a moment of madness ... and with the aid of an easily available gun, leading to death rather than a couple of black eyes. Given that the risk of being faced with a gun in the UK is absolutely tiny, the benefit you'd get from carrying a gun for self defence is tiny too. But the risk you'd be put at if other law-abiding but incompetent people were wandering around with concealed weapons would be quite a bit larger.
An unscientific sample of 3 people in my family and their near misses with guns:
Some loon gave my uncle a 12 bore shotgun when he was 12 years old. He promptly found a piece of curtain rail that would fit down the barrel and used it to try to convert the shotgun to fire 22 rifle rounds which he pinched from school. Next time home from school with a friend, my uncle forgot about the curtain rail, and his friend fired the shotgun with the curtain rail still in the barrel ... barrel got fluted, but didn't explode thank god ... curtain rail knocked a huge junk of turf out of the lawn and friend's shoulder hurt a lot.
My mother used to teach in Colorado and the local police recommended she carry a gun. She took it out to a parking lot to practice firing it and used the side of a lorry trailer to steady her arm while aiming down the side of it ... so that's 50% of her field of view obstructed by the side of the truck. Fortunately no one stepped out from behind it ... unfortuantely the side of the truck stopped the sound from disspersing and so she blew out her right ear drum and has had wonky hearing ever since. (She later brought the gun into the UK in her handbag on a plane .. but that is another story.)
And finally my distant cousin who shot himself in the foot while deer hunting. How? By hanging a cocked rifle in a tree with the safety off ... and then trying to climb the tree ... and standing on the end of the barrel. Realising that was a bit stupid, he took his weight off the end of the gun ... which allowed a twig to pull the trigger whhich blasted a couple of his toes up past his face.
YThe thought of these eejits wandering round with guns to protect themselves scares the hell out of me.
