Where the eastbound A505 used to drop down to a single carriageway there is a speed camera. It was there to a)catch dangermeisters failing to slow down to the 60 limit from the 70 or b)to catch the last straggling overtakers using the downhill advantage to just safely nipping past that lorry/bus/whatever before the s/c crawl.

Anyhow, now they've built the superb bypass the camera is defunct. It's still there but they've allowed a tree to bush in front of its vision and failed to paint the lines on the road.

Now I'm wondering why. Could it be that there are fewer customers now that the dual carriageway extends to the horizon and therefore it's profit and loss didn't add up or could it be because now the road is safer it's not "needed" any more?

It's probably just an empty shell and they remove it eventually.

When they first came to our area, 'they' installed 8 speed camera housings, but there's only 1 actual camera.

Sounds about right. When I was at Uni in Edinburgh, (1995-1999), we just ignored the cameras and set off the flash as there were no cameras inside. Only had 1 or 2 for the whole area and 30 odd camera sites.
