How were those images at the bottom of the article taken by a speed camera? They must have come from CCTV surely?

Maybe if he had lost his job he could have survived by shoplifting for which the new recommendation is no-one is to be jailed for this, no matter how many times they offend.
If he had not used his work van, but had used a car with the plates removed, one might assume that the 'hard detection work and latest technology' would not have caught him.

Heard this on the radio at lunchtime and it had me seething, what absolute bollox!
So a crime against an inanimate object gets you a 12k fine and a spell in chokey.
State bullying, nothing less, totally over the top, disproportionate sentencing and proof (if ever it were needed) that the corporate purse has overwhelming priority over the wellbeing of the majority of law abiding citizens of this country.
Get less for killing someone in certain circumstances... illegal immigrant, uninsured car etc. etc.....

All being put to good use then! Seems crimes against the state are the ultimate no-no.
Wont pay your council tax (with good reason)= jail, vandalise a f
g tax machine = jail, Beat someone to a pulp, terrorise a pensioner in their home, shoplift, joyride, wreck someones property = jails are full, community effing service! What planet are these idiots on?

No, you're utterly wrong. It is not at all over the top sentencing. It is other crimes which are sorely undersentenced.
Personally though I reckon he should not have been given a custodial (assuming of course he doesn't have a history of attempting to blow things up) as there are too many non-violent numpties clogging our prisons up. More appropriate would probably have been community service involving speed camera installation (supervised, of course! ;-) )

if it's the camera i'm thinking of it's either a gatso, but more likely a watchman, as far as i know dont have type approval yet
In the article it says "But the camera was a dummy which cannot be used to prosecute drivers.", so it looks like it's still not type-approved, so he blew it up for nothing!
Donations?
On the rare occasion when one of those Animal Rights Terrorist nutcase b'stards gets imprisoned, they all have a whip around. I think the last one I read about beat someone almost to death and got sent down for a few years, so his scumbag friends from his terror group collected enough money that he'd never have to work again when he got out. Not that he probably worked anyhow but that's not the point.
Maybe we should create a website to collect cash for this chap? Be good publicity.

love the last 2 sentances in the article...
However, the device was a Watchman camera which provides the local authority with traffic information.
The authority uses the information to write to offenders but does not carry out prosecutions.
so it provides traffic information by flashing at you....nope its used to to write to 'offenders'.
offenders in what way?, they haven't been charged with anything, the device isn't type approved, so why are they offenders?

I understand they have 2 cameras, one is a Gatso type still(digital) the other is an ANPR type camera, around here they are hooked up to those boards.
but unlike gatsos they monitor speed as you approach not after you pass them, how i'm not sure.

It has radar in the back of the housing to detect you coming towards it.

2 things about this new camera:
1) images are not taken during offence (only when you pass it), so there will be no image corroboration and you won't be able to fight erroneous fines using the stills
2) What stops ppl seeing it, having already been radared over the limit - and then stopping or pulling a U-turn so as not to pass the camera and get photographed? This could lead to some dangerous actions

Both might have been at same speed ... but if there ist doubt - I think they discard the NIP. Reflects the stupidity of this scheme in essence
Also Curbspeed/redspeed/monitrons.. such as Steviebabes uses up here..
These have some monitoring doo-dah under the road surface.. to monitor spped of approach...
Usually start from the lolly or warning oblong which incorporate the scam/lolly signs. Ist nasty - especially the Ings one as you are soon into the 40 mph from the NSL und just 3/4 second travel from the scams. Oddly though .. seem to scam the people who live in/around Ings..
