I was wondering if it would work. I guess that answers that question - I guess he got caught by one of the cameras that watches the camera...
Or was it really a Gatso?

I like the way they have to make it sound all spectacular on the BBC site -- "Blowing it up", "Blew it to pieces" etc. Thermite just burns quickly and very hot. It doesn't explode by any stretch of the imagination.
But I guess there's no story in "Man melts hole through a camera", and they won't be able to trump up charges of being dangerous to other people.
Good luck to him I say -- while they keep imposing threats of bankruptcy, repossession, divorce and whatever the hell else you suffer through losing your license for committing a documentention error* they can expect people to resort to ever more desperate tactics to avoid detection. The sensible thing would be for the PTB to forget the points system and just take the money, people will be more compliant and it'll cost them less to enforce. After all these camera partnership businesses couldn't care two hoots about improving road safety** as long as they get the revenue to fund their despicable little quangos.

*Driving whilst displaying the wrong number on the speedometer.
**If they did they'd have discovered years ago they are having at best no effect on accident rates, but instead they bury their heads in the sand quoting regression to mean nonsense figures whilst watching the same number of people die every year.

It wasn't a Gatso apparently. Had a dummy flash, but also had CCTV in it!
