Speed Cameras and Why we have them!!!!!!!
Discussion
Have you every wanted to know the real reason behind why we have so many speed camera's?
Well it not a lot to do with safety.
The real reason is statistics.
You see when your car is photographed either speeding or jumping a light its classed as a crime and therefore goes down in the governments statistics for crime in the UK.
So first point it’s classed as a crime.
Second point they have a photo so it’s now classed as a crime detected because they have photographic evidence.
Third point because they send you a nice letter asking for both your cash and licence, when you hand these over its classed as a crime solved.
Place these all in the same bag ‘CRIME’ with muggings, car theft, burglary, rape etc etc (I guess you see the point) and now you can actually dilute the crimes that go unsolved. what do you think the percentage is for camera crime being solved is? very high i guess.
Now the government release the figures and all’s looking good. But in reality those other crimes are going unsolved and things in the bigger picture are getting worse.
Please remember these are my personal opinions.

Speeding isn't counted for crime figures like burglary etc.
No crime reports are filled in for speeding offences, it is not a recordable offence.

not a reportable offence? really? oh well that screws up that theory. must just be for the profit then. anyone told the goverment the police isnt a business, it doesnt exist to make money?
It doesn't make money, the justice system is far more expensive to run than the fines it receives from offenders.

You are gullible Von.The Police don't get SCP money. That's fact.
The SCP can only recover their running costs, no profit. That's fact.
That funding arrangement is changing in 2007, so that netting off goes & all fines go to government (similar to how they do presently for Police FPNs & court fines). That's fact.
If you add up all the fines from court fines, Police FPNs & SCP FPNs, then it won't pay for the cost of Policing, courts, prisons, legal aid etc etc. Nowhere near & that's a fact.
The Justice system & Law enforcement are never going to be a profitable business.

Of course we have to pay for them through taxes. The point is though, that law enforcement & the justice system aren't money making initiatives.

They can't make a profit, but they can spend as much on running their little empires as they like.
Not from 2007.
Fixed budgets from central government & not tied to only camera use either.

Whether or not they "clear" a penny Von, they DO make money and spend it on themselves,in the form of payrises, plush offices, nice vehicles and self advertisment, just like a business in fact.
They couldnt do any of that if they didnt make any money from their activities, ergo they make money.

That's not much consolation for the millions that they've taken from the motoring public and squandered over the years, and I don't see any particular reason to suppose that having somebody else in control of the gravy train will stop it.
Hi Von,
The fact they can make not 1 Million pounds but 10's of millions of pounds but the only catch is 'right guys you can take as much as you like off these drivers'
But make sure you spend every penny or we'll be in trouble.
That is a business, a not for profit business i agree. But beleive me i would love to make millions of pounds and then the only downside is you've got to blow the lot. It's a no brainer and i sure all would agree.
Also speeding is a recorded crime if it wasn't a crime we'd all be doing it and not worrying about our licences.
Von would you be a police officer by chance?

If Vonhosen says it is not a recordable offense then you may be certain that it is not a recordable offense.

The amount that can be taken for any one offence is fixed (as in fixed penalty scheme) for SCPs.

As I said under the new rules for 2007 they will be operating from fixed budgets, they won't be able to recover costs.

Speeding is a crime but it's not a recordable one. If you ask how many speeding offences were commited last year they'll have no idea & have to guess. If you allege someone else was speeding, there is no mechanism to record your allegation & it become part of national statistics, like for burglary etc.

If the point of speed cameras is to make driving stressful then they are working well, I actively avoid long journeys nowadays.
That's a sad state of affairs David. Can't you settle for having your fun where there are no cameras, or do your necessary travels make them difficult to avoid? I'm lucky in that respect - no cameras around here!
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Well what are they then? Our crime and punishment system favours punishment by stealth tax. Punishment should fit the crime. Removal of civil liberty, the right to vote, community service. If money is the issue then why not force employees to reduce salary for a period. If you are caught drink driving you pay a fine. Why? That punishment doesn't fit the crime, DD's should be forced to help in an A&E department where they will come face to face with the harm they could cause.
Paying money to the government is not a punishment that fits a crime, it's simply a system we have become so used to that we are now blind to the fact that it is a stealth tax.
