Speed trap before J5 M1 today
Discussion
I was gently travelling up the M1 when I saw a flashing "50" MPH sign on the M1 today to indicate that there was an incident.
Being the law-abiding, and consumate paranoid individual individual that I am, I slowed down to approximately 53-55 mph.
Imagine my surprise when I come around a bend, and spot approximately 7 police cars chomping at the bit to arrest any delinquent individuals who has paid scant attention to the "incident" warning.
I find this behavoiur somewhat symptomatic of my the police force are increasingly being held in disregard, and are generally seen as a cash collection vehice for Gordon and Tony.
Was this really necessary ?
I proceeded all the way to J5, and the only "Incident" I observed was a car in the hard shoulder pulled over for the heinous crime of travelling a little quickly.
Was the sign correct, and was their truly an incident, and if so, why were the police cars not attending the incident, or was the sign there purely to reflect the fact that the police are becoming somewhat claircoyant in their ability to predict iminent speeding infractions, and therefore creating incidents.
Forgive me for being incensed with this behavoiur, but I work on the basis that each day I have to be able to look at myself in the mirror, and I am not too sure I could do that if I was a puppet.
Respect is something earned not demanded or automatically given because of a uniform. People have to work to earn it. Does being a parasite qualify as work ?

How do you know that was why they were stopped ?
Seven police cars. Anything more serious, there'd have been less

It was ANPR - and it was nice to see 3 transporters filling up nicely with pikeys that hadnt got car insurance, MOT or Tax at London Gateway Services - Looked like a joint operation between the Met, Herts Police and Customs and Excise (or whatever they are called this week
)
See! Not all the vehicles were BiB. Only speeding requires seven vehicles. Ask W Mercia

)Is this really what was happening? If so then well done to BIB.. I think they should be doing this more often!

Brilliant! This is the kind of thing we should see more of. I can't think many taxed, insured and MOTed-up drivers would disapprove of the police doing this kind of thing. It has a real impact on us, too, as every driver forced to start buying insurance is reducing our premiums, and (I think this was mentioned by vonhosen) the conviction of someone for tax/insurance/MOT evasion often throws up some interesting leads about local burglaries and the like too.
I'd also hazard a guess that a car that hasn't seen an MOT testing station in several years is more dangerous than a car speeding by 10-20mph. Whether the statistics bear that out, I don't know.

I am indeed glad that it was ANPR. I just wish they did this more frequently.
It is nice to see that Speeding is not the only offence being prosecuted by the police.

Which you immeadiately "assumed" it was, on it appears not much more than the Police had stopped a car on the motorway. This action initially led led to you being "incensed", but now you want them to do it more regularly.

In typical fashion, when you head the sound of hooves, you immediately think horses, non zebras.
Driving down the road, no obvious signs of accident/incident/roadworks/whatever. All passengers in the car comment on the fact that this looks weird. Drive on a little, spot in excess of 5 police vehicles, and the pin drops. Drive on 4-500 metres, car stopped with blues behind. Get to Junction 5, no accident/incident/roadworks/whatever.
Was the "incident" sign really necessary ?
You see, my simple assumption was that the speed had been manipulated to get people down to 50, and hope that some would ignore, or become frustrated with the lack of any real basis for said "incident" sign. There goes that Horses and Zebras thing again.
How many times have you driven down the road at a speed which was in you opinion completely below what was safe or valid considering the conditions (M25, 40mph, 1-2 AM). Please allow for the fact this was around 1:30 afternoon today, so M1 relatively empty.
Forgive me for being cynical, but I so frequently see speed limits which are set unfairly, and enforced rigidly to the point of lunacy.
Tell my my assessment of the situation is wrong.
The sad reality of the situation is that the good the police do is undermined by their performance and dogged enforcement of the speeding situation and persecution of the driver.
I hasten to add that at the moment I have a clean license, but that is more through paranoia, and the fact that I have all but given up driving on the roads.
