Really crappy day at work yesterday saw me driving home pissed off at 10pm. Was in a foul mood and desperate to get home (missed a dinner with friends, wife in a bad mood, etc) so was driving a lot faster than usual.

Was driving on the A40 and overtook a new black 5 series BMW (roads were pretty empty). Two mins later the BMW caught up with me and the blue lights came on... Looked down at the digi speedo: 84mph in a 50mph zone..

Got signalled to pull over. We'd both just managed to stop on the hard shoulder when the cop car suddenly pulled out and roared off down road with all lights flashing - got a huge dirty look from the driver as they went past. I'm guessing they just got some other incident call to deal with. The car didn't seem to have a dash camera and it didn't really look like a traffic car (looked more like an armed response car or something).

I'm guessing 84mph would be an automatic ban so I did I just have the luckiest escape ever? Could they still do me for this just with my numberplate?

Was the driver in uniform? Could someone be taking the piss?

How does that compare being stopped at 52 mph in a 30 zone, in the pissing rain, without a seatbelt, in a car with questionable tyres?

Walked away (after offering some 'apologetic' sentiments) with no more than a finger wag.

Please note, I have thoroughly changed my ways since this event, and it makes me cringe to think back on it.

A friend of mine had a similar thing happen to him, he was in a 2 car convoy and the police pulled the one at the front so my mate drove round and carried on, he got a NIP through the post.
I think the cops know who you are before they stop you (computer check)or at least who you should be.
Might this fall into the 14 days to produce a Notice of intention to prosecute thingy.

Hmm - stopping for an unmarked car. Worth checking occupants in uniform?

Where on A40?

Got on at the Paddington flyover and got stopped just before the Shepherd's Bush exit.

The car was definitely a genuine one - hidden lights in the front grill, siren, etc etc. Two guys both in white cop shirts and body armour. Really did look like some kind of unmarked armed response jobby. Was 10pm so dark.

I was blatantly hammering it so my guess is I would have got stopped and a major bollocking even if they weren't traffic cops but I guess I'll never know.

It is harder to spot an officer in uniform in an unmarked car these days, the Lincolnshire police in the main are wearing black polo shirts, which makes it very difficult to pick them out as officers.

Just next to the darkest deepest hole in Britain...interesting place to burn off unmarked plod. Very tempting to go fast on that section.

I'd say a very lucky escape.
Best lucky escape of anyone I actually know, was 20 odd years ago, a friend plus a pillion was speeding on his very dodgy motorcycle. Shouldn't have been riding it at all, as it really wasn't safe, but teenagers aren't always the wisest.
A Police biker on a BMW spots him & pulls him over into a layby. He then proceeds to give my friend a well deserved bollocking.
The copper has his back to his BMW, but my mate can see it slowly leaning over due to the soft ground below it's centre stand. When it finally topples, the copper tells my friend & his pillion that if they help him lift the BMW back up, they can go on their way.
