Says he was not speeding but had "tooted" at the busy bodies manning this. It sound to me like the busy bodies asked the policeman to be present as they did not like the driver indicating what he think of them by tooting.

It depend on the toot und subjective interpretation on their part.

To me it highlight danger of busy body "Martin of the Ever Decreasing Circle" schemes as targetting people they have grudge agains

Cambs disbanded one such scheme. Leader of Council und their Prat spokesperson even admitted mistake on "You/Yours" und "Vine" prog last spring. Policeman in North East commented that he found on an audit to set up one such scheme.. those complaining broke speed limit themselves in the neighbouring villages too... rolleyes

If one wants such a scheme - then they themselves have to be able to be a robot like lieber von laugh und never ever "err above a speed limit lolly"

und the moon ist made of cream cheese too

Carnt see where I can post a comment on the story.

Just looks like again a case of Officers ego being bruised, in very similar fashion to the officer that pursued the guy who gave a cammera van the finger.

Officer seems to have been sat with two idiot civillians in the van (by idiots I mean people that actually think the van is saving lives), passing car tooted his horn, idiots said he always does that, officer said "does he know who I am, I am a policeman, how dare he", plus wanted to look good and prove his worthiness and power to the idiots, and used the full weight of the law to pursue this serious henius crime.

Guy let himself down, should have insisted he sounded the horn because something had happened, i.e. dog in road etc. Doubt the prats in the van would be able to say that was not true, as they would have more than likely been hunched over the camera, slavering, dribleing and sniggering at oncoming traffic.

edit, just reread, the idiots where them prats that stand and take readings for the police to send threatening letters to. He shouldnt have tooted his horn, mounting the kerb at speed would have been more approprate.

The more cases like this come to light the more these jerks who work on "Cooumity Speedwatch" schemes will realise that people HATE them. If any of my friends volunteered for such a scheme they would not be my friends any longer.

Five seconds of horn is not a toot, it's harrassment. We can't know the real situation but the local residents were likely there because the noise of speeding traffic had become a nuisance. If it's a residential area then speed limits need to be enforced for nuisance reasons as much as safety.
On the other hand I don't understand why the police officer decided to chase the guy rather than noting his number and sending a letter. Chasing is a dangerous activity.

Welcome to the Peoples' Republic of Britain, the land of fascist liberalism. A place where neighbours spy and inform on one another for displaying unacceptable opinions. Dissent and you will pay the price.

It's a brave new world.

Disagree. If you have to sound the horn, do so until you get a reaction from the target of the sounding. Five seconds is a long blast, but if the old lady still looks like she might step out after 4s, then keep going

Perhaps he couldn't have known that? Maybe he'll edit it when he reads your comment.

Obviously there was no such reason to be using the horn in the manner he did, so a trained professional used his judgement & discretionary powers, deciding that it was an unnecessary use of the horn & prosecuted.

Or is it a case of when people talk about wanting traffic officers on the road using discretion, they only want that judgement & discretion working one way ?

Years ago the Police set up a speed trap in Barton under Needwood, a village just out side Burton, after complaints of speeding motorists passing through the village, 85% of those caught, you guessed it, lived in the village.

Goes to show that just because you break the limit doesn't mean you don't want them enforced. It's just you want them enforced for everyone else not you. After all you're a better driving than all the others. rolleyes

Why would you be surprised that most who are caught by speed enforcement are going to be local ?
They are going to have the higher exposure to the risk of capture being most likely to travel that way.

Indeed. It makes one a bit sick with the (as Wildcat says) the "Ever Decreasing Circles" types' opinions corroding our way of life.

Isn't this because vehicle nuisance is only a problem to those outside the vehicle. Cars are much quieter inside than outside. They are designed for the occupants only, hence the lack of attention to pedestrian safety. When you're inside the car the noise level is not much different whether you're doing 6 or 60 but outside the difference is huge. Wrapped up in your car it's hard to see yourself as others see you. There are some EU regs coming on vehicle noise (no, not to make them even quieter inside). I think this could explain why everyone sees everyone else as the problem on this speeding through the village issue.

I do have a small one. It's nothing to boast about. I only have a problem with a few threads though and actually this one seems to be OK now.

Yes, that's exactly the case. I don't want police officers penalising people for actions which are safe and reasonable but just happen to breach the letter of the law. Police officers *have* to use their discretion and judgement to decide how rigorously to enforce the law. And that strikes me as a completely healthy and desirable state of affairs.
