I understand forward facing cameras are on trial (if you'll pardon the pun) in Essex.

What better way to test a FFC than in conjunction with a RFC.

DO you think the flash from one will muck up the picture from the other?

Do FFCs still use a visible flash or do they use infrared flash?

Times Online said:
The new forward-facing camera has been developed by Gatso, the biggest speed camera supplier, to work in conjunction with traditional rear-facing cameras. The flash of the first camera triggers the second, which takes a digital image of the front of the vehicle, using an infra-red filter to prevent the driver from being dazzled and to ensure clarity in darkness.

The London partnership has bought five of the cameras, which cost £10,000 each, and is installing two on Lower Thames Street in the City next week. Several other partnerships, including Derbyshire, have expressed interest and hundreds of the cameras are expected to be installed across Britain. Trevor Hall, operations manager of the Essex partnership, said: “The cameras have been highly successful in cases where the driver claims it was his wife but the image clearly shows it was a man driving. When people see the images it helps to change their minds.”

I’ve sniffed around the Gasto site; it would appear they actually do supply a digital camera with infra-red flash.

Unless the rear camera is actually in shot of the first (resulting with CCD blooming) - no!
Even if it was, the second camera could be made to operate after a slight time delay (the flash only lasts for one thousandths of a second), hence the front camera takes the photo after the first flash has ended - definitely no!

Must be a real contribution to road safety when it blinds a driver who's travelling at above the speed limit on an accident blackspotrolleyes

On the pepipoo thread there's a fair bit of speculation that the flash from one is actually what triggers the other.

They are considered as two independent devices because you cant start plugging anything into a home office approved device as a normal GATSO is.

The only thing they share is the power pole next to them.

It takes hi-res front facing images, triggerred by the flash of the normal GATSO and gives no visible flash so that you can see who was driving when someone trys to sell their points to the dead grandmother.

Had them in Essex for a couple of years now.

they must have changed them of late, because when I saw that precise camera set up go off, flashes were highly visable from both housings..

I don't doubt that; I'm just saying that the flash from the master shouldn't affect the picture from the slave.

Interesting! Is the flash from the front ID camera Gatso white or Truvelo magenta?

Gatso White on the occassion I saw it triggered. It certainly would have blinded anyone in its path..

There is this setup on the A127 on the way into Saaaarrrfend .... Been there for a couple of years. Never seen them go off as the traffic is always busy at that point. I guess they see more action at night ..

I wonder if there’s more to this. Could the secondary camera also be a ‘camera camera’ - placed to keep watch over the primary camera? (the primary being considerably more expensive)

It could go something like this: when the primary camera detects faults like “I’m getting warm” (thermite or a burning tyre kind of warm) or “what’s this foamy stuff?”, it will trigger its camera and flash, the secondary camera being triggered capturing the saints/offenders out of view of the primary, hence greatly increasing the chance of capturing evidence.
