I saw a paper today putting forward the idea that people who smoke while driving should be trated the same as those who use mobiles.

What do we think?

Insurers often ask if the applicant is a smoker or not, smokers are deemed to be higher risk.
I remember someone who thought they'd flicked their fag end out of the window, didn't realise it had actually blown onto a coat that was on the rear seat!
So maybe in the future insurers will not cover smokers. As such, if you smoked in a private car it could negate your insurance.
Actually, most people I know who smoke don't smoke in their cars anyway, as it makes the car harder to sell.

Personally I would prefer it if people didn't smoke in cars, simply because I don't think you can be in conrol as much as somebody who doesn't smoke, however I accept smoking may calm some people's nerves, making them less likely to have an accident....

Now regarding mobile phones this is a definite nono, penalties should be increased to £250 and an automatic 3 penalty points, the law is just being flouted by thousands daily.....The other day I saw a lorry driver negotiating a busy roundabout in Manchester with his articulated monster truck while looking down and textingyikes on his mobile....He should have had the book thrown at him....judge

Again I accept cicumstances can vary, for instance having a brief conversation on a deserted stretch of motorway at 5am in the morning, but generally mobile phone conversations and driving do not mix.........

Yeah, and thinking about it, lets ban manual transmission too, how can anyone concentrate on their driving when they have to take their hands off the wheel to change gear. And what about ICE, same thing there too, you should be driving not fiddling with the stereo. And no talking to any passengers either.

It's getting bloody daft.

I agree. Where will it stop. I don't remember seeing smoking as being a cause of an accident.

Ban smoking in cars which don't have proper opening quarterlights expressly for the purpose.

It's not rolling that's the problem, it's putting in the roach when going around a r-a-b

I quite like the idea of smokers smoking in cars, as long as they keep the windows shut, and don't pollute the climate for the rest of us.

Also they should not throw their old fags out the window, especially when still lit. mad

Better still I hope they drop their fags and set fire to there own cars mad

Smoking has been banned for years in cars (in town) in Sweden and rightly so!! I used to be a tobacco addict and smoked many, way too many, per day, and often dropped my fag or the burning end into my crutch area, and that causes panic, especially when driving a company car.
PANIC STATIONS!!! and no chance of looking at the road when panicing.
That alone is a reason for banning smoking in cars...for your and others safety!!!! If I'dve had a prang whilst that was going on itd've always been my fault!!!

Not one for being the nannying type, but phones hand-held and smoking are at least as bad for your driving attention as a yammering brat on the back seat!!!!!

The (then) boyfriend of a former employee (back in the '70s) was negotiating a corner in his car (a Ford Pop IIRC) when he tried to take a cigarette out of his mouth. Unfortunately the ciggy stuck to his bottom lip and all he suceeded in doing was pulling the glowing end off the fag ... which dropped into his lap. He tried frantically to prevent the ember burning through his trousers and causing untellable damage to his manhood (not to mention the pain! yikes) and collided with a lamp-post.

Was this accident down to smoking or to stupidity? Is smoking whilst driving stupid? Is smoking stupid? Should driving whilst stupid be an offence?

Why can't we just police 'without due care' and 'failure to maintain adequate control' properly; we already have more than enough laws, we don't need any more.
