muslim police officer refuses to work....

heard on the radio a muslim police officer in the met has refused to go on duty outside the iran embassy (pls correct me if im wrong!!!) due to dissagreeing with certain actions of the above named contry. now i dont know lots about law, but my dad has been a police officer for 25yrs and i have always understood that a police officer cannot go on strike. i know he has not gone on strike as such but refuseing to do a job to me is pretty much like going on strike. we all have to do things in our jobs that we dissagree with or dont wanna do but thats life. can anyone verify this news for me as im confused! and has he commited a crime? This is not a racist dig just that im inquisitive! please excuse the poor spelling and grammer!
