Should I be worried about this clicky as it's on a completely different vehicle or is there some process I should follow to register it as copied and / or ask for another vehicle registration?

Thanks

Guessing that you've had your plate cloned then?

Without going into ANY specific details (in case the scummy git with your copied plate is reading) - I take it your vehicle is different enough to be obviously not that one?

If it's a car, or obviously a much bigger bike, send a letter explaining, and offer to send them a copy of the V5. Don't bury your head in the sand. As for worrying about the same number...shouldn't ever be a problem, but the usual caveat is "what if that bike is used in an armed robbery?" - do you want a knock at the door at 3am.

Get a crime number too (ie get it reported as cloned, NOW!).

Obviously this assumes I haven't got completely the wrong end of the stick!

No, not cloned. Some little monkey made up a plate that just so happens was mine. I have a Grey Porsche Cayman, he as a red moped. Not too difficult to work out it's not me, but will the reg be on the "look for" list that the clever police cars roam the streets autonomously checking?

AND do everything in writing, keep copies, send it by special delivery (yes I know it costs don't rely on recorded delivery), keep receipts, proof of delivery etc etc etc.

If the London councils are as bad as TfL they will have the bailiffs knocking on your door even when you have proved to them it is a cloning situation.

Expect to be writing more letters.

All comments assuming that as prev poster said this is a genuine cloning and not an attempt at get out of jail free card. No disrespect to OP intended.

btw if not said already, if further notices appear, report it formally each time, more chance of the muppet having collar felt. Until then keep YOURSELF Persil and carry all docs, prepare to be stopped regularly.

No, if it was cloned then it would be on the SAME vehicle. If I had a red scooter with that reg, it would have been cloned. He didn't bother doing that.

Oh, I completely agree with you there!

Have just called the council and they have a procedure for this. Send them a copy of your tax disk and they cancel the ticket immediately.

Now, my question still stands - should I get another reg for the car / is there a stolen reg reporting process I should use?

Yes this is cloning, its the plate thats been cloned not the car.

Don't forget good old trusty ANPR systems only a see a reg number, they'll check the plate number to see if its taxed, MOT'd & Insured not the car or vehicle its stuck to. Good old infallable computers

I see the official from the gov is they'll only do something if it's a recurring problem.

That also fail to note its just plates being cloned, they think its whole cars

They also forget to inform you that its £29 for a new number + new plates

Plus plates are readily available from ROI & NI perfectly legally without all that ID crap.

And they will tell you that no crime has been committed, which is what they did me.

Which is somewhat astonishing because I am fairly sure that one has.

Reported it at the cop sop.

Policeman chappy checked with others and said they would record it against the car reg, but no crime has been comitted.

Ok, no problem.... but didn't quite understand that. Interestingly, he admitted he didn't either!

So it's not legal to go around with a different reg, but it's not actually illegal either.

Bizarre this law thing!

Yep and if they mark it then you get stopped as well as the moped, just to check.

Astonishing isnt it.

I got a letter back from the met yesterday 'on investigation...no further action...sorry' which was nice.

Could one of the BIB expand on this please? If stopped could the cloner only be charged with a standard non-endorsable number plate offence?

The naivity is (almost) touching. But that's typical of government, they think that legislation works against criminals ... whereas it often simply gets in the way of the law-abiding (and makes criminals out of them) - Streaky
