It is here on video:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqE1q7QaeTY

It is all a bit daunting but I decided to make a mini vidio using my camera youtube and windows movie maker (standard with windows xp) If you want to make a movie about your favorite bit of camera law I will "host" it on the "scamera" id on youutube.

rule 1 entering the speed limit on a principle road thee must be two signs
rule 2 if there is a street lamp within 50m the speed limit sign must be lit by electricity
rule 3 If onesign on the junction needs to be lit, they all have to be lit

repeater signs do not need to be lit
entering a side road to a different speed only needs one sign
signs must be to a very strict standard

I hope it helps someone

Good stuff Tony, having just spotted a new speedlimit imposed local to us there are some drastic errors in the signing system.

Notably no 40mph repeater signs for 1 mile or more, on a section that was previously an NSL of course rage

That's terminal signs to be lit.

Yep, terminal sings must be lit if they are on a "principle raod or trunk road" AND there is a street lamp within 50m. (any direction)

"Lit" is an interesting term. some councils think that bolting it to a lamp post makes it lit. Unless they have "bendy light" I very much doubt the face of the sign will be lit. The proper way is to fit it with a designed personal lamp for the sign (as seen in the film)

Also they move the speed limit signs out without adding lighting or thee is no trace of the traffic order(especialy on fly overs as it is expensive)

I found 5 serious defects on the 3 mile trip to tescos
2 defective signs were notin a full red circle , 1 was not clean enouh to be reflective, 1 was not lit (faulty light) and 1 was compleatly missing on the left hand side. A new powered pole has been installed but no sign or light.

Does that mean that a speed limit sign only lit by a lamppost is not legal?

The 'Bible' (TSGD2002) sayeth:

"be continuously illuminated by means of internal or external lighting and may also be reflectorised;

or

while the street lamp is lit, be continuously illuminated by means of external lighting and shall also be reflectorised."

Unless a sign has backlight or its own dedicated anglepoise it's not 'lit' it's just sitting there pretending.

Is this tested in case law. There is a new 40 limit on a main A road new me with the sign placed (unlit) between the street lighting. It is clearly visable etc and based on DVD comments could be argued to be lit by the ambient street lighting
