You said it FiF. You couldn;t make this stuff up!
Detailed study shows cams in m-way roadworks reduce safety.
Official proposal follows to install cams across the m-way network.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

Not about Safety though is it, it's about carbon output.
the speed camera = safety brigade have had their argument blown out of the water too many times, so they change tact, they have to pay their pensions some how.
over time we'll hear less speed kill, and more speed = carbon, till they get fed up of that arguments been pulled apart, then we'll have something else.
and what about the carbon used to make the cameras, install them, run them?
Plant a load more trees - look nice and do a great cleaning job!
Its just more control-freakery, anyone 'speeding' down the motorway is the modern day equivalent of a toff on his horse hunting the peasantry to this lot

I drove 215 miles on the M6 and M5 yesterday evening in a total time of 5¼ hours (due to jams)- so an average of 41mph! Specs don't seem to be needed! One set of road works was labelled as starting in Oct06 and ending in Sept07 - one year! A car that is stopped on a 'congested' motorway is definitely an inefficient source of CO2.
Surely a car cruising at a steady 70 to 80 for 215 miles in 3¼ hours would emitt less CO2 than a car travelling the same distance in 5¼hours and having to brake, stop and accelerate.

The more plant food gas a car emits, the better. Crops grow more and we can better feed the world's starving poor. The study states that lowering the speed limit would be fairer than using taxation, such as raising fuel duty, to reduce emissions.
I don't get it. Surely the fairest way to reduce emissions is to charge more per emission, if you can't measure emissions, then inputs is the closest next step, and there is a mechanism in place for measuring and charging for inputs already.
If we want to help the poor, then great, let's give them money, or a job, or tax breaks, but lets not distort everything else.
No doubt they'll wangle it so we get "taxed" according to our average speed, hopefully ther'll be an uprising against all this crap in the near future, the government will be brought to their knees, civil servants will be in hiding & we'll have the roads back as it used to be.
Hail the revolution

If I drive at higher speed, my journey is quicker...and after a point the amount of fuel I use also rises. I'm pretty sure that speed won't be 50-55mph though, and for the majority of cars it won't be. The very fact that many hatchbacks now have a six gear, which is there solely for economy, shows that we're already pandering to this lot.
Shock!
I've done my own study (using my own money - nobody would sponsor me!) that driving at 0mph reduces CO2 emmissions on roads and motorways to nothing.
It also has the side effect that KSIs will reduce faster than any other policy in place to today.
Therefore this has become law today.
(PS the country will grind to a halt, but at least we would have saved the planet, and meet our 2010 promise!!)

Surely all the congestion caused by a vastly underfunded transport network causes the most emissions.
It's just yet another scam. They could entice many off the roads by providing a cheap and efficient public transport system, and improve the road network for the rest of us by removing the bottlenecks.
The A43 between the M1 and M40 is a modern road but has such pisspoor junctions either
end and so many roundabouts that is must shove emissions through the roof!
If this ever comes in then I will stop using motorways wherever possible and start using 'A' and 'B' roads.

The problem with the speed = carbon arguement is that it is true......damn, damn, damn.
Aerodynamics are the biggest issue at higher speeds and these increase exponentially so travelling at 80mph is a lot worse then 70 etc. If you dont belive me just look at how much horsepower is needed to get these super cars up over 200mph. Also light weight cars like Elises and VX220s are very quick at accelerating upto 90mph but suffer big time against the heavy weight and horse power rich bigger cars once over a ton.
If you have ever been on a motorbike at 70 and the accelerated upto 90 the differnce in pressure on your chest is many times greater.

Why don't they promote home-working as a way of saving carbon emissions? Anyone whose job involves being in front of a PC all day could just as easily work at home via broadband or work in alocal centre equipped with PCs and the like. Easy to measure productivity, and I always find I get twice as much work done when I am based at home.
Ah but that wouldn't involve lots of spending on gadgets and lots of snooping. Just a way to raise more money

Whoa don't get all carried away here, so at 80 you're producing marginally more plant food than at 70, so what? In the scheme of things farting cows are more of a threat to the planet.
If you believe all this global warming crap is real and not the latest boogie man to control us with then look at ways to reduce all the gas coming from Whitehall
