Speeding fines spent on fripperies

Camera partnerships buy T-shirts and plasma screens

Fines spent on fripperies

Speed camera partnerships are spending the revenue raised on PR and marketing materials such as T-shirts and expensive plasma screens, according to a story in the Telegraph this morning.

The partnerships -- which consist of the police and local authorities -- have spent £95 million running the 4,650 discredited speed cameras, figures that have come to light following a parliamentary question.

For example, in 2005-06, the partnership in Avon, Somerset and Gloucestershire spent £326,400 on publicity, £81,700 on accommodation, and slightly under £500,000 on administration. The organisations in Derbyshire and Essex were the ones who splashed out on fancy screens and T-shirts.

Camera costs vary wildly too, with each device costing just over £73,000 to maintain, while returning a profit of over £113,000. in Lancashire, the figures are £8,972 and £12,615, reckons the Telegraph's story.

Opposition spokesmen said that the partnerships were about spending public money and "expanding their own empires while doing nothing about real road safety problems such as uninsured drivers and people driving with no licence".

Lobby group the RAC Foundation called for a watchdog body to be set up by the Government to monitor expenditure.

Last year, nearly two million motorists were nabbed by speed cameras, shelling out some £120 million in fines in the process. Meanwhile, traffic police numbers fell by 11 per cent.

PistonHeads reckons a redressing of the balance is well overdue, especially since speed cameras have been shown statistically to worsen road safety.

We really shouldn't be surprised anymore with these stories.
Did any one really think the money was being used to increase road safety.
These guys actually want people to drive around like idiots being flashed at by
as many scameras as poss so we can line their pockets...
Its just another side to the corrupt world we live in.

If this was France, we'd have been on the streets by now.

Look what happened with relatively small fuel protests, so it can be done.

I was pulled over by a Police Car on M65 on Saturday due to my new car being shown on their records as having no insurance and tax was due in 2 days. I was not too bothered by this as luckily I had all my docs on passenger seat and was allowed to continue although warned that I may be stopped by every Traffic cop on way back to Scotland!!!

Why can we not have more traffic cops as I'm sure that if they want to make money they could do so by catching folk without insurance, licence, etc.

I saw in our local town centre (Dumfries) that the speed (Safety) camera partnership had a massive (20ft x 30 ft) inflatable bill board with a crash scene to advertise itself. Must of cost a heck of a lot of money to set up. Someone had to sit in the generator van all day making sure it was inflated. At least the speed camera van was there for some of the time and not on the roads.

What did you expect, as long as they get their expenses paid with our money they couldn't give a crap if speed cameras cause accidents or not.

Nice to see the money is being spent on a struggling, underfunded NHS.

What do you expect when the police outsource their work to private, unaccountable companies.

All I will say is that whenever our local scamps advertise for staff in the back office the advert always seems to make a big play of, newly refurbished offices, state of the art office equipment, various other pay and rations incentives.

In the meantime they set up a new scamming site near the scene of a fatac where two lads had a severe vehicle tree interface situation due to them driving way over anything sensible never mind permitted limits. Fair enough one might think.

Except the site they have set up is AFTER the scene, just round the corner at the point where first view of van is where the vehicle is at its most unstable, AND at the same time the Highways authority have resurfaced with sealed mastic asphalt. For anyone who doesn't know about SMA it's that stuff which has been proven in the dry to be as slippery as wet tarmac.

You couldn't make it up, safety my arse!

Let me think......

I have a private company that earns shed loads. Any Profit i have to hand over to the government!
Any expenses i can keep....

Now which hotel do i need to stay in when i visit London
What company car can i have
What Salary do i draw.

All these are valid expenses. WAKE UP, FFS. This is just one big boys/girls club. Like the rest of Government....

Cutting a long story short, a colleague got towed while legally parked in the smoke.
As he was so sure he was legally parked he reported the car nicked.
Further investigation resulted in reports from neighbours of people he was visiting identifying where his car had actually gone.
He recovered car having paid fine, towing charge etc etc. That side of things still ongoing, major scam by various London authorities involving falsification of legal documents. As an aside I'm afraid he doesn't have the spine to take it all the way, I digress.
He then immediately went back to plod shop where he intitially reported vehicle theft to update situation.
Details already on PCN, but warned he might get stopped a lot.
Next day he went to Scotland.
Stopped three times in course of journey.

On the other hand, maybe he was stopped by all three patrol cars he saw??

You know that cameras were introduced into Italy and they were all pulled down in the first week? The government didn't bother trying again!

Much as we moan and groan, we need to actually do something about it. Why not EVERYONE write, take to the streets - just do something!!!

Problem is that with all this green talk (climate change) they (the government) are unlikley to do anything.

I think if you work on a comprimise e.g. cameras in 30 limit, but no cameras out of town where it doesn't make ANY difference you might be able to do something.

More fatalities out of town than in town.

That means there's more risk of the cameras increasing the fatalities then, which is what the cameras seem to do, according to the govt's own figures, (then ones they try to hide).
