Hi,

Was hoping for some advise! I bought a car from a friend last week as he has moved away and no longer needs it. The car needed MOT and servicing and the Tax runs out tomorrow. Now the problem! The car is in being serviced and MOT'd at the moment and should be done tomorrow. I have insured the car but can't tax it as the tax reminder form is in my friends name and he can't find the V5. He sent it off when he bought the car 6 months ago and DVLA have changed the owner details to himself but DVLA never returned a new logbook or it got lost in the post.

I have the yellow part of the v5 that he kept when he bought the car 6 Months ago and a tax reminder (in his name so DVLA have changed owner details). He has called DVLA and they advised him to get me to send the yellow bit off with a covering letter and they would issue a V5 in my name.

This is fine but how do I tax it in the mean time? Will I have to declare the car SORN! My friend can't do it as he no longer has insurance for the car.

Help please

cen

Look up the address of your local vehicle licencing centre. If its close by pay them a visit explaining the situatin and they will sort things out for you. Alternatively go along to a local post office that renews car tax and fill in a form (the number of which I cannot remember) stating that you have purchased the vehicle and are not in possesion of the V5. Unless the rules have changed recently this is perfectly acceptable.
