I read on this forum recently that a change in speed limit from NSL to 30 had to be stepped down to 40 between these limits.

On the road this morning I noticed 2 instances where it dropped straight from NSL to 30 with cameras soon after the limit change.

Is this a guideline or a legal requirement? Or just untrue?

I believe it's a guideline.

Don't complain. If it's put in the 40 will go into the NSL, not the 30.

Nope its not in legislation, but apparently there may be a traffic notes circular somewhere in the depths of the DfT. Personally I've never seen it but that means nothing in the overall scheme of things.

I have also seen on a motorway link road subject to road works the limit go from 70 to 20 in one hit. Admittedly only a muppet would have actually been doing 70 approaching the scene, but that was the limit technically in force. The 20 sign was just round a bend too, and no countdown markers either.

Not nice, not clever.

Countdown markers are in a DfT circular - strongly discouraging their use. (Rightly so, in my view).

If you are referring to circular 1/06 it does accept they have a place where "if there is a particular problem with road users seeing terminal gateway speed limit signs in good time."

That is exactly the problem I'm talking about ie round a bend, surely Shirley.
