From last nights local paper it appears that Dorset police are handing out 100 fixed penalties a month to motorists who use their mobile phones whilst driving and intend carrying out more enforcement.
They also said that out of 756 colisions recorded by the Police in the last 12 months only two were caused by the driver using a mobile phone.
Are they not therefore expanding a large amount of effort on something that is the cause of less than 1% of accidents?

Writing a FPN when you see someone on the phone doesn't take a great deal of effort.

The one thing that surprises me about this is the small number of accidents caused by mobile phone use. I would have thought that talking on a mobile phone, diverting your attention from the road, was far more dangerous than that. (Unlike making good progress whilst focusing on your driving which, as we all know, is actually very safe)

Maybe something to do with the fact that their crime solving rate for 2004 was less than 18%.

You could argue that if they stopped then the figures would shoot up, In my opinion, they should get 6 points, £300 fine and the phone confiscated, idiots/

If they really want to stamp it out, make it a £1000 fine for the first offence, that may make them think next time.

Do any of you guys think before you write?

Lets steal their phone, lets charge them hurrendus amounts of money, lets mutilate them!

Can any of you honestly say you ALWAYS have both hands on the wheel while driving?

It may be contrary to your belief but some people can forget to charge their bluetooth headsets, somepeople may just need to answer a call - its life.

There is nothing to suggest that using a phone while driving is unsafe, its no more unsafe than, putting on makeup, eating a MKDs or anthing else. This daft and unjustifiable legislation bears all the hallmarks of why we cant use a phone while filling up at a petrol station because of all the hundreds that blew up in a year, at the time in 2 of them it was known that someone was using a phone. Nothing but nanny state making boundaries as ususal

What are you guys really saying, we cant do two things at once, we cant listen to someone and drive at the same time, i cant control a car with one hand, were freaking morons???

Think then write

No it wasn't Hedders. Your first thought was surely that Streaky is in the wrong continent! UK- mobile phones, US- Cell phones! No wonder they dont work in Dorset.

Petrol companies don't like people using mobile phones in case someone finds a way of messing up their pump read-outs like they did with CB radio. Regs don't forbid it and experiments by Mythbusters, Brainiac and others though perhaps not very scientific have failed to ignite anything. smokin

I still have not seen anybody post any stats involving mobile phone use and accidents. Until I see those stats, I'll remain largely 'couldn't care less' about people on phones while driving.

Dorset Police say that out of 756 collisions they attended two involved the use of a mobile phone. They did not say if they involved serious injury, I suspect they didn't or they would have mentioned it.

Like yourself I am cynical. Lots of people may be using phones but there is no corellation to the number of accidents. If the Police decide to concentrate on the use of mobile phones as a political crusade then so be it: just don't confuse it with road safety.

It would seem from this and other stuff that there is no difference between hand held and hands-free use. Why then did the govt go to some lengths to allow hands free use? Why not just ban mobile phone use for drivers?

Because that would be a vote loser & cause them a headache.
So take an option that makes it look like you are doing something about it & apeases certain groups.

Since when was Road policing policy about reducing accidents?
