Insuring a UK registered car abroad
Discussion
Hi,
I am going to be in europe for an extended period of time and I want to take my car with me. My Uk insurance has a limit to the number of days I can drive in eurpope and it isnt enough to cover my stay.
So can I get my car insured in Germany as it is or do i need to have it TUV'd and stuff?
I'll be over there for about 9 months if that makes a difference?
Has anyone else done this?
cheers

Only company to do a twelve month green card is Norwich Union, I have been using them while I'm in Dussledorf but don't expect them to quote you happy!

AFAIK, under Euro law, all UK insurance companies are
legally required to do a Green Card for as long as you like.
It's only third party insurance, is Green Card. In reality,
you want a lot more insurance than that. Fire and Theft for
instance.
If you are going to Germany for nine months and you
know you are coming back, then it's a bit pointless messing
about with the TUV etc.
I forget exactly how long you are allowed in Germany with a
foreign registered car. I guess Google will help here.
In these cases, I have heard good reports about
Luxembourg insurance companies. They don't seem to care
where you live, and they don't seem to care where you drive,
but I've not got any experience of how good they
are when it comes to claim time ;-<
They also appear to do their forms in English, French and German
which helps.

DrP, you have to register your car in Germany only within 12 months (actually 355 days) and then get all other paperwork done... Tüv etc
I'd not recommend you getting insured necessarily with a german company, the Lux. ones seem to be better (less burocratic)..... and make sure you get a gren card as oterwise it can be a problem if involved somewhere else in an incident.
AND you'll have to register yourself in Germany with the Ausländerpolizei, and get a permit to live (although it's actually your right) an Aufenthaltsgenehmigung. You may have to have one before someone will let you any flat.... depends on the people and area though.
You don't have to get your license until the mentioned 355 days, however if you're using your GB one it's better to have an International as well as german burocrats are not allowed officially to understand another language (otherwise they'd be "recognising" the non-german paperwork, you have to have a recognised i.e. court approved translation!) Typical german overzealous burocracy.....
