Here we go.....
Those lovely people at the Scamera Partnerships are at it again.
A press release today from West Yorkshire's motley crew states:
"Speeding is leading factor in crashes and is a reported causation factor in 28-30% of fatal crashes. (Slower Speeds Initiative www.slower-speeds.org.uk)"
www.safetycameraswestyorkshire.co.uk//news-item.htm?news=77
Hmm. So the official Dft figures show "excess speed" (not just "Speeding"
as a causation in 26% of fatal crashes. So, as we all know, "Speeding" per se will be somewhat less.
And wasn't it 5% of crashes caused by "Exceeding the speed limit"?
But these figures clearly aren't good enough for the Scamera Partnership, so they quote some unofficial source (when exactly was this information collated??) and suit it to their own needs......
And who the heck are Slower Speeds anyway? Just had a look at their website, and this lot make Transport 2000 look like a bunch of petrolhead speedfreaks......

Not even that. 5% of injury crashes in 2005 had exceeding the speed limit recorded as ONE contributory factor (certainly not the 'cause') and even within that 5% factors were coded as 'very likely' or 'possible' (we don't yet know how many of which).
And of course quite a large (but unknown) proportion of those 'exceeding the speed limit' crashes will have involved some fairly extreme behaviours (unlicenced driver, uninsured, reckless, escaping Police, Police driver on emergency call, blind drunk, motor racing on the highway, stolen car and so on). Crashes caused by otherwise responsible drivers who were 'very likely' exceeding the speed limit is probably under 2%.
How about this for a statistic?
The slower speeds website lists links to 7 other organisations who between them have collected a total of under 8,000 hits on thier websites since the start of October.
I'd guess that Pistonheads on it's own racks up more hits than that in a single week (let alone all the other car forums)
Ergo, There are far more petrolheads out there than tree-hugging, speed-nazis

Remember bandwidth costs money, so lets go for a look.
Just seen this on their site
www.safetycameraswestyorkshire.co.uk/polls.htm
A poll with just one answer, the one they want, surprisingly they get a 100% yes vote.
