I am in possession of a photo as evidence that a car went through a red light. It is in fact a picture of a car with its front wheels over a white line. It actually proves nothing.

What actually happens with these? IS it a section of a bigger pic with the traffic light shown? Is there a second pic showing the light at red before the car crossed over the white line?

Is there likely to be more evidence I can see to show an offence was actually committed or does there not need to be more than this?

Im no expert but I though two pictures in order to prove the vehicle was moving and also time lapse since the signal change.

most red light cameras that i've seen sit before the lights (before them on the road), so that when they take a picture, you get a rear view of your car, and the lights in question.

It could be one of a trio from a redspeed camera, which shows a close-up of the plate.

Well that just shows how easy it is to manipulate digital images!

Anybody trust a speed camera image?

Yes, but surely the second Red Light Cameras page is of much more concern.

It seems to show (and I'd like incontrovertible proof that the image hasn't been doctored) that somewhere in the UK, there is a cyclist who actually obeys a red light

I assume it's the close up of the plate one then!

Ask them for all the evidence, including the one which actually enables you to ID the car and the traffic light.

I have taken some legal advice as it could be any of the 3 drivers at the time. I genuinely don't know which it was, but apparently, I have nowhere to go and will get prosecuted as reg keeper under S172. Apparently best to plead guilty and get on with life!

Does S172 say you have to know who was driving at any time or just make enquiries?

The photo's on the website illustrating the various examples show quite clearly that all the driver's involved were driving perfectly safely. None of them was travelling above 30mph so really I can't understand why they are being prosecuted???

You have to be diligent and make reasonable effort s to establish who was driving at the time. NIP should have arrived within 14 days so the events be recent enough to establish who was driving when and where. If you have a list of who was driving, and interview them to get when and where they were, and there is overlap around the time of the offence and location of the offence -- the classic example being a couple of guys who were alternately driving a car round the block to move home, then that's enough.

Burden of proof is on you to show that you have been diligent so get your notebook and pencil out.

Check with your insurer whether they prefer points for S172 or the redlight offence...

In answer to the question posed in the title, it comes in zip-lock bags with labels. Alternatively, it can be found mouldering away in the dingy basements of police stations ... except for certain powders and pills which will have long ago been removed and had their efficacy tested - Streaky
