I recieved a penalty notice through the post on Saturday for entering a checkered box when it wasn't clear when I was driving into London on Monday. I know that I did wrong, but the traffic was horrendous and if I didn't get onto the box then I would have been stuck there for at least another 5 minutes as the other road that entered from the right kept on getting the gaps in the traffic. I am not looking for sympathy, but this is yet another easy target approach to get money out of otherwise law obiding citizens and charging an excessive amount for it. I wonder how many of the Black Cabs that also kept on blocking the box got fined.scratchchin

This was the junction with Queen Victoria Street by the Barbican.

The fine was laid out as follows: -

£50 if I pay now.
£100 if I pay after 14 days but before 28 days.
£150 if I pay after that date.

This was also fine number CITY00002442, so I can only assume that this is a new monitoring and fining activity that the to$$£r Ken Livingstone is going after shoothippy.

you know its wrong,

you still go ahead and do it (to save 5 mins!)

you get caught, and punished,

then you moan about it.

how strange!

There are some things that should be monitored and automatically penalised, and there are other thigns that should not. A "do not enter unless your exit is clear" box is one of those things that should be monitored, I think.

Will you do it again? I assume not, and therefore they work.

As an aside, I must assume they had signs stating there were cameras on the box?

perhaps the yellow boxes have been monitored, and the cameras are the result.

Logic would dictate that it's a hot spot for it, so it would make sense (you know what they say about assuming, though hehe)

As I said, I do not want sympathy and I know I did wrong. I am warning others of falling prey to the same thing. I am sure you would moan too if you had to pay out money for something that you feel would be better served with a warning, e.g. the illuminating signs that tell you what speed you are going followed by a or a , as they do in Surbiton and other areas.

I have learned from my mistake and am not willing to go into a discussion about my reasons as you would surely find fault. I don't need the "all righteous" like yourself to get up on the soapbox and lecture.

I have sympathy with the OP.

One of the banes of driving these days is the people who won't enter the box junction, when they're turning right.

They should advance to the centre of the box, allowing a couple of cars to wait behind them, and all 3 to go when oncoming traffic clears. These days you get the odd driver who won't enter the "box junction" at all and holds everyone up.

I'm amazed at the size of the penalty ticket the OP describes. They certainly know how to charge!

living in the city this is my pet hate (especially those fuc4ing stupid 300ft long bendy buses) so dont have any sympathy sorry. i do share your dislike for this mealy mouthed, parasitic "regulate and fine" dogma that this government uses to employ so many of its otherwise unemployable supporters, simply because only the law abiding ever pay.

Ah, yellow box junctions. Cause for a rant or two:

1. bus drivers appear to believe that they are immune;

2. other drivers don't understand them and will beep you if you do not advance onto one, even though it is clear that your exit is blocked.

The Highway Code states that you should not enter the yellow box unless your exit is clear, though.

One of the thing which really boils my p1ss is drivers who sit in a yellow box blocking my route, usually pciking their nose and eating crisps.

However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

(sorry should have commented too, didn't meant to make it look arsey!hehe)

The important bit is that you are able to enter the box so long as the only thing stopping you is oncoming traffic. Unfortunately it's an area which (understandably) people are not really aware of and so you can see why they don't approach the junction.

I would assume that the junction covered by the camera we are talking about has no right turn attached to it - otherwise how would the camera discriminate between legitimately waiting and just being caught in traffic.

And that's what worries me.

If I am stationary in the box waiting to turn right and some numpty jumps the lights in the opposite direction, I am stuck still in a yellow box on red. Which means a ring stretching from Uncle Ken.

No thanks.

But you're already through your own lights and so would be able to continue your manouvere once knob-boy has finished jumping the lights?

I grant you though, camera control of these is a bit worrying!

The cameras take a photo if something is satationary in the box when lights are red, IIRC?

For what? If you were the only vehicle waiting to turn right, then you are in the right (albeit in a physically dangerous position). YBJ monitoring is by CCTV, so the entire incident is filmed. If there is a RLC as well, you shouldn't trigger it as you were in the YBJ before the lights turned red.

As others have pointed out before me, there can only be one stationary vehicle in a YBJ and that if the vehicle is turning right.

There is a YBJ in London that is currently causing concern because of the number of vehicles being caught it it. It does appear badly designed and may in fact be improperly laid out. Apparently, the yellow lines must come right to the kerb edge. Do they in the one you were snapped in? DVD will be along in a mo' with chapter and verse.

As Streaky said, perhaps CCTV is available as well because the reason for being stationary on a YBJ will need to be put into context? I am being very dangerous though and assuming there is common sense being applied to this. Also, we are assuming that a camera controlled YBJ has a right turn from it - which would eradicate the need for this rule to be covered if it were not there.

Curiously, that's a misrepresentation by the HC of what it actually says in TSRGD, but only to the extent that it requires that it is a stationary vehicle that blocks your exit. Peds and cyclists you may stop in the box for.

Note also that you can stop in the box if your exit is clear, and whilst that might be evidence of a S3 offence, TfL can't do you for that.
