Do laser detectors work?
Discussion
What is the general feeling toward laser detectors. A friend of mine reckons there no good as he got loads of false alarms off flashing orange lights. The other main thing people claim is that by the time the gear has sensed the laser the bu@@ers have got you.
Is there any validity in the thought that you can pick you laser scatter from the car infront? I'm I best off going with sat nav with camera database installed.
Whats the feeling or evidence

You're better off with a database - the laser detector will only go off once you have been pinged by the mobile scamera so you then know you have a NIP on it's way to you! At least with the database you are warned of the site so you can make the appropriate 'adjustment' to your speed, before getting pinged. Or at least stand a better chance. Hope this helps.
At long distance a laser detector can be useful. The resulting beam spread will mean that it should hit many parts of your car (including the windscreen which is where your detector will be) as well as other road features, all this creating a significant risk of detected slip error - meaning that the operator may need a few attempts to get a good speed reading. You might be able to scrub any excess speed off before he gets a valid reading.
At close range a laser detector is more or less useless. The operator will aim at your plate, at close range practically none of the beam will spill into your windscreen mounted detector. Also, if the gun is aligned correctly, there is far less chance of a slip error being detected - he'll have you on his first attempt. You won't have time to react even of your detector has properly alerted you.

Had a road angel with the laser attachment, not once in 2 years did it go off. Bought a Garmin I3, update the camera database monthly, cheaper and just as effective, with the bonus of navigation included.
I've had an RA for about the same time and not once did it go off, till two weeks ago on the M6. Was concentrating on a BMW changing lanes every 10 secs in my mirror, so didn't notice the mobile camera van on the bridge till my RA started shouting at me "LASER LASER CHECK YOUR SPEED" .
I was doing just over 70, so I was ok, but I doubt that I could have reacted in time if I was going faster.
Offtopic Footnote: I though that the camera operators were only supposed to target drivers that they thought were speeding, rather than anyone and everyone? (Most other cars were going quicker than me at the time).

Indeed, but until you invent a brain/memory scanning device, how are you going to argue the case?
