Anyone know whether the new rules for booster seats for kids apply to the side facing seats in Land Rovers? As these only have lap belts there is no benefit in sticking the little blighters up higher to bang their heads on the top of the window rather than the middle. It would probably make them less safe if anything as the chance of them bending sideways over the rear seat backs is increased.

Something in LRO about side facing seats not being allowed to be used at all by children under the new height limit.

I'll see if I can find it in a bit...

www.rac.co.uk/web/knowhow/owning_a_car/safety_security/child_seat_safety;jsessionid=1E865E...#140

See section in link above about "My vehicle has sideways facing seats", about 15 down. Appears that you cannot fit a child restraint in these seats and therefore should not have children in those seats, if I've interpreted it correctly rolleyes

Actually its ambiguous, not sure what it means, sorry !

Bum. I've just bought a seven seat Discovery. My boy loves riding in the side-on seats in the back. Keeps the dog company too. I wouldn't consider it for Motorway journeys but bimbling round the countryside its great fun for him. But if nanny says no what can you do? (other than ignore it and hope the local BIB have a more liberal attitude / better things to do than the government)

Did a little searching and found this on the FAQ section of the "Think Road Safety" site at www .nannyknowsbest.org/stopthat/putthatdown/dontdothat/youllhavesomeoneseyeout.html It's under the section "I have an unusual vehicle". Rare beasts Land Rovers hardly ever see them these days rolleyes.

D. My vehicle has sideways-facing seats
There has never been a legal requirement to fit seat belts in sideways-facing seats. The human body bends forward from the waist - it does not bend sideways and the potential for internal and spinal injury is high therefore if a passenger is secured with a seat belt in a sideways-facing seat. For similar reasons, the type-approval standard for child seats and boosters does not include fixing them in a sideways-facing seat.

A child who is required to use child seats/boosters (ie all those under 135 cms in height who are also under 12 years of age) cannot travel in a sideways-facing seat. A child who needs to use a child seats or boosters must use a forward or rearward facing seat only.

Fits with MrsBlueCerb's digging and looks like it covers the Defender style benches or my Discos fold down jobs.

Probably should have googled before but then we wouldnt have had this fun conversation
