An alternative to the Criminal Justice System
Discussion
Based on the points sytem of our Driving Licenses.
E.g.
Drunk and disorderly = 10 points.
Common assault = 15 points
Burglary = 25 points
The greater violence or financial harm caused by the offence the larger the points.
When xx is accumulated that means a spell in prison.
Points are removed by:
Financial penalty (only under certain circumstances)
Stint in prison
Community Service (meaningful, though, not just finding stuff for people to do 'cos they HAVE to do it)
E.g.
2001 Scrote admits/is convicted of £50 worth criminal damage. Given £100 FPN and 10 points.
2002 Scrote admits/is convicted of being drunk and disorderly. Given £100 FPN and 20 points.
2003 Scrote admits/is convicted of GBH. Given £100 FPN and 200 points.
Threshold is 200 points so Scrote is jailed until his points score returns to 200. If he behaves himself while in prison, his points are removed at 10 per month. If not, then 5 per month.
Assuming he behaves himself, he is released after 3 months.
If he keeps his nose clean (meaning he does not come to the attention of the police) his points are removed at, say, 5 per month.

Interesting idea Mr glf, but rather than have a general Community Service type of punishment I think the culprit should be made to repair the damage caused to his victim, where an individual victim can be identified and the damage is repairable. Failing that, then yes, do something that benefits the community.
In cases where the damage or harm caused is not repairable the punishment should be increased. It always annoys me that in cases of vandalism the culprit may be caught and punished, but the community still has to make good the damage at our expense.
Best wishes all,
Dave.
