Got flashed while heading towards a yellow beast which was on the opposite side of the road (I thought it caught people heading away from it). Also the road is quite wide so it took me by surprise. Was doing about 38 in a 30 zone at 11.30pm (no one around).

It's happened to me once before somewhere else and I never received a fine so I'm wondering if this is just a glitch?

Truvelo's can, Gatso's can't. Technically I believe the Gatso could, but they don't have type approval to operate that way in the UK.

As you were

If there was a carriageway which can carry oncoming traffic, between you and the camera then you should be OK; if not then you're at grave risk!

Not with a Gatso you're not... You can go towards them as fast as you want even on a single carriageway
