48 in a 30 zone - what to expect
Discussion
Hi, I have recieved a NIP for 48 in a 30 zone, stupid of me but I didn't realise the limit. ( the road was wide, with large verges in an industrial area with no buildings within 100 yards of the road. No excuse I know)
What fine & points can I expect? Would it be worth trying the PACE statement as I was in a pool car at the time. My old company ran the Volvo IT helpdesk and on business, we used to use a Volvo pool car. The nip was sent to them, they gave my name and I recieved another nip addressed to me c/o my old company.
any advice would be gratefully accepted. I currently have a clean license.

Actually it's a bloody good excuse, there are now miles of even dual carraigeway in the UK clogged up with 30 limits. This is because: a) The only way to get a speed camera installed is where too many people are speeding.
b) The best way to make too many people speed is by using pathetic and unrealistic limits.
See why you got caught now?
If it was a busy high-street or in front of a primary school there could be no camera, because most people drive slowly past them.
If you were driving admit it, but take them to court on the speeding if you can, we will all benefit and losing isn't that expensive (the price is probably on the NIP). Who knows - you may win. The CPS need to:
1) Prove the 30 limit is valid
2) Prove the camera was validly calibrated and installed/operated
3) Present the evidence
Until then you are innocent.

If there's regularly spaced lamp posts then the 30 limit is valid. It is a rule that you must be aware of if you wish to avoid feeding the sharks as they love to take advantage of it!
I got done for speeding in '98 for mistaking a 30 for an NSL on an unfamiliar road in Scotland. I was doing 54 and was stopped by a Policeman wielding a hairdrier. I had not noticed the lamp posts on the long straight road which went across heathland - no buildings.
I found out from locals and a friend (from back home) who also got done on exactly the same stretch of road for mistaking the limit that it is a regular haunt for a speed trap!
I got 3 points and a £120 fine - probably would have been 4 points but for the statement and photos of the road I enclosed with my plea saying it was a genuine mistake and that if road safety really was the issue here then a few extra signs wouldn't go amiss. My boss payed the fine.
I bet the Highland Scammers are out in force on that stretch these days!
Thanks for the replies guys.
I noticed at the bottom of the nip there is a section for office use only which has 2 tick boxes like this:
30mph and p/c
48mph and s
The bottom box is filled in. Is this anything to be worried about?
I will probably ask for the calbration certificate and photo evidence to make sure all procedures have been followed. Also, do the scammers have to form a prior opinion of whether someone is speeding or can they just ping anyone?

What a scam!! This artice: www.safespeed.org.uk/rules.html
explains why speed cameras are always installed/used on safe roads, and never where you'd want them put.
