For a long time now, some say over two years, a police car has been parked outside a local Little Chef and Travel Lodge site in N. Wales.

I am now told by a staff member of this establishment that the car is parked to deter theft from vehicles at the site. When thefts fall off, it is moved. When they rise it comes back. It was there yesterday.

I guess they must have lots of spare cars if they can afford to leave this out of use for so long. If there are regular thefts at this site, how hard can it be to nick the offenders.

Similar thing happened in N Wales some time ago when police requested that a phone box be taken away as it was in regular use by drug dealers. Errr.... so why didn't they nick them? They knew where they were likely to turn up.

Maybe if the police car has gone it's because it's been nicked?

They leave cop cars parked right by the motorway at j12 of the M1. I am relieved when i see one there as it means there are probably no highway police actually on the motorway...

having seen the state of police vehicles that are sent to auction, i would assume that the car they are parking there is at the end of its servicable life, therefore no use to the police, exept in circumstances such as this. and believe me, you really wouldnt want to buy an ex trafpol car.

Father used to run one (a Senator) and apart from a bust GBox it did him proud for years.

I have never seen a current "active service" police car used, they are normally cars that are off the current fleet and would be down the local auction had they not been diverted to this crime prevention role for a period of time. Obviously that affects the forces cash flow as the money coming back is used to reinvest into the new fleet but some cars are not worth much (major engine failure) and some have a finacial agreement with the venue to stop the force loosing money.

My force has used this at locations with great effect. Although the car is empty punters thought the bibs were close by and did not cause bother. A classic example of preventing crime.

After a spate of armed raids at a motoway service/junction near me they put a decoy Police car, if I told you where it was, it would defeat the object, so I won't.

When police received a tip-off that armed robbers were about to strike at a jewellers in their area, they immediately swung into action.

They left an empty police car in a street adjacent to Henry Johnstone's shop.

Hours later, gunmen in business suits walked straight past the car and stormed in threatening staff with guns.

sorry, no offence meant. i can only go on what i have seen going through the block at brighouse.

They used to be a good buy...high miles and some standard features missing, but well maintained.

I would guess speed humps put an end to that. Witness police videos on TV....I wouldn't buy one now.

They do that in Hathersage, Derbyshire. Corsa, or something, marked as Special Constabulary.

I guess the local Special nips out in it for his fish and chips....
