if hypothetically one ended up with using a lawyer in a S172 case that went to court and were found innocent, does one get the legal costs covered, in full, in part or not at all?

If they are reasonable they are usually covered in full.

You should also apply for your costs too if you go to court as a witness. Petrol, parking, time to prepare the case and time of work should all be included.

There are only a few solicitors who dont get their costs covered in full, but them that is because they charge £4000 a day.

If the costs you are asking for a a bit less than that, you should be ok!

Even as a witness you get a small amount, something like £50/day, doesn't cover lost earnings, not even slightly.

You will get reasonable costs.
