Leaving a shotgun in the car boot overnight
Discussion
Well I am a gun dealer and as you will know it is a legal requirement to have all shotguns secured in a home office approved cabinet securely bolted to a wall in your house, so I would imagine there would be some awkward questions to answer if your vehicle was broken into or stolen overnight, (unlikely, but not impossible)
My advice to anyone is don't take any chances with any type of gun where the
are concerned ...

Not sure it is technically illeagal, but I would not want to have to explain to BiB that my xyz was in the boot when the car went missing
Can you not store them at the clay ground?...most I've been to have storage facilities.
If you do have to leave them in the hotel, break the gun and store it in bits, prefferably taking the trigger action/firing pin with you if you can...just in case

DO NOT KEEP THEM UNATTENDED EVER NEVER MIND OVERNIGHT IN A CAR.
I got a guys licensed revoked for having a gun lying on the back seat of his alarmed and locked car while he bought a paper from a shop. The Sheriff was flabberghasted that he would even think this was ok.
Example armed bibs leave guns lying in locked police car while they nip into roll shop. Yep mental. NEVER EVER EVER LEAVE A GUN UNATTENDED EVER.

Seem to recall when I was a country beat bobby (Waaazzthat)conditions were placed on the Certificate one being that when they were unattended they had to be kept in a locked container - even in the house.
Failure to observe the conditions of Licence - offence and could give C o P grounds for revoking said Certificate.

Would there be a problem if, to get a long distance away clay shoot, someone were to leave the shotties in the boot of the locked and alarmed and trackered car overnight?
What would the police do if they found the weapons had been left overnight like that?

I leave cartridges in the boot but the guns get stuck under the bed if there are no other options.
My view is that I would be in trouble if someone nicked them from the back of the car. I suspect that the insurance wouldn't be paid out either.

The gun should be in a locked cabinet which is fixed to a wall. The ammunition must be kepet seperate also under lock and key. Gun under the bed is a no no.

This does make it very difficult to attend a shoot when you need to stay overnight. Although I presume a local gunsmith or club could be persuaded to house the weapon.
I have visions of shooters sleeping with their weapons in the bed! It was in use the whole time, officer...

... There is a danger in 'loving' your gun a bit too much.

the host should provide facilities that have been approved or other suitable arrangements should be made.

When I got my cert done earlier this year, I asked the officer why he needed employment details/e-mail etc and he told me it was to help trace me if I moved. He then told me about some of the difficult cases he was having in tracking folk down. He quoted one guy who's secure cabinet was in his van, but that had now appently moved (van & all) to spain.
A shotgun is not a shotgun unless it is assembled. If that is what you are referring to, do something to make it unuseable. A simple bike chain lock will do to secure it in your room through placing it around a radiator pipe and then through the trigger guard of the gun (or some other thing/object that will make it difficult to remove) if there is no safe to store it in. Some degree of sensible precaution needs to be used to show that an effort was made to make the guns less easy to steal.
I think you will find that most police officers investigating theft of guns will be fairly sympathetic if you have tried to make them difficult to steal. If you have not made an effort, then expect the worst consequences regarding your entitlements to possess guns.
Take the fore end off and take it with you. Store the rest of the article in the room of your hotel hidden out of the way if you cannot secure it as I suggested above. DO NOT LEAVE ANY WEAPON UNATTENDED IN YOUR CAR! EVER
