Do 172s have to be signed?

As I said in a previous thread, I was expecting a S172 for someone else driving, and have now got it. I notice that the signature on it is printed. Is that valid?

It has been calculated that so many of these are generated that it would require 237 full time employees just to do the signing. The cost of ball point ink has yet to be calculated.
