Just nowe I was on my way home, stopped for a red light, which lets traffic out of a small side junciton. I sat there for almost 5 minutes waiting for the light to chage, but nothing happened, it stayed on red. During this time not a single car came out of the side road. The Yaris behind me (I was at the front) lost patience and dorve aorund me and through the light. After checking there was no one coming and there were no BiB around I followed him. After I did so a Saab waiting to go the other way did the same.

I kept an eye on the lights in my rear view mirror but they still didn't change. There's no way the'yd stay red for that long just to let cars out of a tiny side street (no pedestrian crossings) so I can only presume the lights were stuck. Would I get in trouble for going through them if they won't change?

Nope. I take it you did the decent thing and told plod so they can arrange to get them unstuck.

Nope - you need to be careful at some lights to make sure you get close enough to the line, otherwise they'll not change...but sounds like these were goosed.

Dont count on that - some highways department just dont seem to bother setting traffic light timings in accordance with traffic flow,at least in my area they dont.

I take it youve told them so they can take a look and change it? They do these things on a regular basis when the public bring it to their attention. They rely on you because you pass the lights every day several times. They probably check to see if they are working once every 6 months.

traffic flows change depending on other factors. The local authorities sometimes set traffic lights in odd ways to prevent further problems in other places. All part of the big picture. The guys and girls that arrange traffic lights are very sharp cookies. Give them a call and you might be suprised how happy they are to explain the reason why or send somebody out to change it.

If so, the guys and girls who do the job in London have been re-shaped with a very bent cookie-cutter, in the form of Lying Ken Livingstone. Some of the phasing and sequencing there is absurd, and has no possible explanation except to inflict pain on drivers.

it could also be part of the political plan to cut congestion by putting drivers off comming into London. If they are instructed to do this type of conduct then they have to. It just shows that they are sharper than we give them credit for.

Les Dawson was brilliant at playing the piano badly. (I always liked that wee phrase)
