Walked past the wife's car on the weekend and noticed a little red note on the windscreen-
Police Warning Notice - vehicle excise duty. eek

Now, here's where it gets interesting. My wife is away in Oz for 3 months, and on checking, has failed to tax her car (expired Aug 06, and no I don't use it)

I can't find the V5 anywhere, and she doesn't have a clue where it is, so I need to get a replacement logbook in order to tax it.

I've asked about submitting a V10 with my sig on it to the local DVLA, but I need to change the address. If I change the address, I need my wife sig on it.

Would it be ok for me to sign with old address then get the tax. (and change the address at a later date)

Grateful for any ideas, as the mail from Oz will take a while!

Cheers

First job get the vehicle off the road. Then go to DVLA site and put a SORN in on line.

Whilst on the site get the details of your nearest DVLA Office and either visit or speak to them and they will explain how you can get back to being legal.

You will of course need wife's Insurance/MOT.

If you have the reminder notice to hand you may be able to tax the car online, although sometimes it's not possible if they don't have the insurance and/or MOT records electronically stored. Worth a go though:

If you don't have the reminder (which needs to have the reference number in the yellow rectangle top right) then I'm afraid this is no use. Sorry.

Thanks for the replies.

Without the logbook nor reminder (post electronic MOT), I have no way of taxing online.

I have spoken to the local DVLA office, and as there is a change of details required for the V5, it requires my wifes signature. I will see if I can request new V5 (using a V62 with my signature) not having any change of details, apply there and then and get tax disc.

I will then have to register change of details for a new V5, as the other would be posted to the old address.

Does this sound like a plan? (I will of course get the car off the road in the meantime)

Cheers again

Are you worried about the super dooper handwriting recognition system and very accurate databases at DVLA run by very observant civil servants, or just considerably more moral than I would be in your circumstances?
