Would it be totally cynical of me to think that the police are now orchestrating accidents in order to justify the installation of cameras in the future?

laugh We'll have red light cameras there next week!

To be fair to real BiB though, these were CSO's!

No, the police were orchestrating accidents to justify the non-installation of traffic-PCSOs

"The Officer in charge was holding his head in his hands...." Err, hardly! If the 'Officer in Charge' can't handle a slight prang in the roadway, he shouldn't be wearing the uniform.

Presumably it wasn't handling the "slight prang" that was the problem. It was the knowledge that his colleagues will be taking the piss for evermore that he managed to supervise such a shambles (irrespective of his blame) and having to explain to his superiors what happened.

As a young passenger and then driver many years ago, it always fascinated me to watch one particular PC directing traffic at one particular junction which was always very busy. The apparent ease with which he used to keep the traffic moving was brilliant.

An 'old fashioned Officer' in every sense of the word, well over 6ft tall with a 'military bearing', he commanded instant respect. Wow betide anyone who moved when they shouldn't, or worse, was slow to move when they should

It was only later that I realised how hard it must have been physically, never mind mentally, to keep his arms moving and held in the air for hours at a time that I could appreciate the fitness required as well.

Eventually lights were placed at the junction and the traffic never flowed as smoothly again.

I'm sure there are some retired BiB out there who cut their teeth on Point Duty who could regale us with tales to tell exactly how difficult it was to 'keep the flow going', so perhaps we shouldn't be too judgemental of the people involved in this incident.

I can remember doing it at a busy junction in my probation, with a Sergeant bellowing instructions from the pavement. It was knackering, and not something I would ever want to do again, thank you. Plus I always had the sneaking suspicion that traffic would have flowed just as well if we had left well alone.

You'd think so wouldn't you. I wonder if the crash would have occurred if the drivers used a bit of nouse.
