simple equasion - thoughts............
Discussion
Maybe it's ben done before, don't know, but is danger/safety all down to just 1 simple equasion?.
Risk of conflict X Relative velocity = Danger level.
For example, if you took your car to the Bonneville salt flats and you were the only person there, then the risk of conflict with any other vehicle/person/object is practically Zero. Therefore even if the relative velocity number (speed) is high, the danger level would be very low. And this is true.
Another example would be on the motorway. The main conflict is with vehicles travelling in the same direction, you're isolated from vehicles in the opposite direction, so the risk of conflict fairly low. The relative velocity of the vehicles is also quite low and is only high when you have the odd car crawling along at 45, and the odd car hooning down the outside lane. So, conflict is low, relative speed is low, and surprise surprise motorways are the safest roads that we have.
Supermarket car part - high risk of conflict,
School at end of school day - very high risk of conflict, but killing 1 in 5 is acceptable, which hitting a child at 30MPH would do (according to the 'safety' teams)
velocity can increase conflict however, for instance if you were on a completely clear motorway but your speed continued to increase, there would come a point where there was real risk of losing control of the car, this is depending on the car and the driver of course, but it will happen, however these speeds are very high, and we generally don't drive at speeds where we are likely to lose control.
Now it seems to me that the police USED to naturally use this equation all the time. Someone doing 100MPH on a clear motorway isn't really a donger as there is little conflict, regardless of the speed. Someone doing 35 past a school should be pulled and had a word with, and even fines for speeding.
The speeding laws were useful for the police to catch dangerous drivers.
Speed cameras clearly don't give a monkeys about conflict, just the number.
So prosecute millions of safe drivers, and leave quite a lot of the dangerous ones alone.
Speed does kill, but only if you hit someone with it, and if you hit them properly having your needle pointing at 30 aint going to help 'em.
that's what I think anyway.
