So no money for Arrive Alive either then? Oh sorry, that's self-funding of course.

Is having bobbies on the beat an effect use of resources, though? Sure they act as a deterrent and reassure the community but in terms of actually being able to travel to an ongoing urgenm incident anything more than say a 1/4 mile away, they are pretty useless.

That is not to suggest that Brunstrum knows what he is doing because I don't think he does but having BiB's on the beat isn't always the answer.

Bobbies on the beat deal with what is on their beat.
Response cars respond in a hurry.
2 different roles, each as important as the other though.

Possibly not an efficient use of resources, but I would hazard a guess that it may well be effective.

I'd say Bobbies on the beat, while they don't catch many criminals, are very useful to reduce the perception that crime is out of control.

Fear of crime is way way higher than the instance of crime - if the two can be measured side by side at all.

To my mind Bobbies on the beat are Preventative. Scrotes won't be too keen to rob old ladies outside the shops if they know coppers are patrolling. Plus people feel more able to walk the streets full stop if they know the police are around.

I think the point I was trying to make was that some MoP want their cake and eat it. An immediate response when they cal 999 and the reassurance of BiB's on the beat.

That is fine until it gets busy.

So, instead, we get neither. Bargain!

Not true. You get limited numbers of both.

Usual story.
Everyone wants more police. No-one wants to pay for them. Happens so often it's a non story really.

Really? I haven't seen a bobby on the beat since 1999. If that's the kind of limited numbers you have in mind, then I guess 999 calls don't get immediate responses either.

I was suprised to see two uniformed officers patrolling on foot down my (suburban) road a few weeks ago. They said that there had been many complaints about chavs and scooter borne idiots so were starting to do foot patrols. Since then, the large chav congregations that used to be a regular evening event are much less common.

The old BotB had the advantages that the hem of the cape could be weighted (with lead or pennies), making it (a) hang properly in the rain, and (b) idead for clobbering a scrote; and the truncheon was effective when held by the wood to welt the scrote across the face. The cape is not required in the car, and a sheathed truncheon makes it difficult to sit comfortably - Streaky

It appears that there is an ever increasing drought in Home Office pool of Plodmoney and the screws are being turned. Many Forces are having to cut back severley on manpower so fings aint going to get better,

......unless of course HMG can raise more money parking, speed cameras, toll roads etc etc.

Most of the wages bill goes on pensions of course. over 70% I believe.
There are many many more pensioners than there are serving officers paying contributions.
My force alone has five retired chief constables alive and receiving a pension.
That alone is a vast sum, never mind the ex DCC's and ACC's and lower ranks.
It's a time bomb that successive governments have ignored.
