A27 "Improvements" by Reducing Speed Limits
Discussion
I have been looking at the website for Norman Baker MP and found this article www.normanbaker.org.uk/press_releases/2006/061223_A27.htm where he has persuaded the Highways Agency to reduce the speed limit to 50mph on the A27 between Beddingham and Polegate. Is this justified?
"I am also pleased that the Highways Agency has agreed to look seriously at roadside signs, pointing out to drivers the existence of the parallel railway where a frequent and reliable train service now operates, and covers the Lewes-Polegate section is as little as 12 minutes, much speedier than by road."
Prick
as if anyone seriously commutes between the two. the 27 is busy because its the only real route along to brighton and beyond. Its also in good order and an nsl limit is appropriate apart from where that petrol station is on the corner - where its currently a 40. that bit could catch out the unwary.
why not chuck a bit of money at a small feeder lane that bypasses that horrid lewes roundabout and joins the 27 a bit later on?
Ive heard rumours of a flyover where the crossing is. would be interesting if it ever happened. which i doubt.
the fundamental problem is a lack of capacity, both in the junctions and the road itself. you can rarely travel at the nsl because of freight transporters and people who are too gutless or pathetic to overtake which leads to queues while the constant one lane roundabouts lead to horrid tailbacks.

The flyover at the railway crossing is being build now. The daft thing is its only going to be a single carriage way width bridge. So if the A27 dual carriage way was extended in comming years from Lewes to Eastbourne the bridge would be a bottle neck.
A bit like Hand Cross hill. 3 lanes into 2 and a steep hill.
50mph on that section, who is going to do that if the conditions permit? Some sections are slower than 50 some are a lot faster than 50. (although never more than 60 ofcourse officer)
