Computerised MOT
Discussion
Anyway, the advisories are just a marketing ploy. Took my Alfa for a full service (ie check it over and tell me about anything that needs fixing, not just the manufacturer's x,000 mile service). Had a couple of things fixed, was told the front tyres needed changing now, told about a couple of things that could wait for 12 months. Bought new tyres, took it in for its MOT - was given an advisory list as long as my arm including the rear suspension wot had just been done, and a completely spurious engine oil leak. Of course, having just had the service done by a recognised independant specialist I was confident in ignoring the advisory - but I'm sure a lot of people would have been worried about it. It could also look bad when you try to sell the car and hand over the maintenance record.
The advisory list is stored on the computer system, although I don't think there is much of a link between the PNC and the MOT database yet. However I suspect in the near future the ANPR will be linked up, so driving past one in an MOT failure will result in being pulled over and a vehicle examination. I doubt that advisories would ever be inspected unless the vehicle has already been pulled for something else.

bear in mind though if the car has an accident and it's as a result of ignoring an advised item (say marginal play in a ball joint that subsequently fails six months after the test) you could be liable for criminal negligence
it's all stored on record and available to anyone that needs it off the VOSA website

Possibly, but the advisories on the MOT before I bought mine were 'rusted exhaust & loose ball joints', both of which I had to replace within 6 months of buying it.
The garage I bought it from didn't tell me about those advisories though, I found out on the MOT website.....
