Can someone post a link to a full set of construction & use regs? I've tried to search for them but all I can find are ammendments. Either I'm not searching for the right thing, or I'm being blonde banghead

I'm looking for a section on tyres - specifically if its legal to use non-E marked tyres on the public highway.

The full Con and Use Regs have not been published on the Web, or at least in many years I have been unable to find them. Probably because they are of 1984 vintage.

Go to your local Reference Library and see if they have a copy of volume 2 Stones Justice's Manual and you will find it in there. Also other Road Traffic legiulslation so take a flask and sarnies. Or a friendly Solicitor may let you view his copy.

If I get time I will see what mine says but just off the top of my head if the item not E rated then its illegal under EEC Rules.

There was a case that set a precedent re this E marking issue, might be worth looking for, concerned Dunlop race tyres.

AFAIK They don't have to E marked to comply with C&U regs, but they do have to be of similar construction & suitable. Ie NOT slicks with the minimum tread visible (17% water channels think F2 Rally slicks)

Apparently,

Legislation requiring all passenger cars and their trailers to be fitted with new tyres to 'E' or 'e' type approved became effective on the 1st January 1995
All car tyres sold from 1st July 1997 must carry an 'E' marking. The 'E' or 'e' mark consists of an 'E' or 'e' followed by a number included in a circle of 12mm diameter or a rectangle. This symbol is followed by a further number

The 'E' certifies that the tyre complies with the dimensional, performance and marking requirements of ECE Regulation 30.

The 'e' certifies that the tyre complies with the dimensional, performance and marking requirements of DIRECTIVE 92/23/EEC.

The number associated with the letter 'E' in the circle or 'e' in the rectangle is the code number of the government which granted the type approval (No. 11 for the British Government and a different identifying number for each of the other European countries involved).

The number outside the circle or rectangle is the number of the type approval certificate issued for that particular tyre size/type.

Haven't read all through it, but this might contain more authorative answers to your questions.

It must be legal, otherwise every new Evo driving away from the
forecourt is on illegal tyres.....Yokohama Advan A-046 235/45 R17
tyres are the atandard fitment in Japan, and they are NOT "e" or "E"
marked. I can't see any "J" marks either.

Interestingly with the last couple of years, Yokohama have withdrawn
these tyres from sale in the UK as they are not actually "certified"
for our weather conditions, i.e. they are "summer" tyres and do not
perform well at temperatures under 7 centigrade.

Not sure how that leaves the legality of using them in the ice and
snow if you have an accident.
On the one hand not suitable for low temperatures, but on the
other hand standard fit when the car is purchased in the UK......??

"E" marks are required on tyres for SVA

They don't sell them because of this.

Sorry, not totally correct. The Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994 referred to covers only the supply ( commercial sale) of tyres and not the use of those tyres.

Yes, as quoted, all tyres supplied, with certain exemptions must be e-marked.

Grahamdance may be interested to know that one exemption is

(c) a tyre constructed solely for use on vehicles in competitions and bearing words or letters which indicate that use and which were moulded on to or into the tyre at the time of manufacture;

which might be the answer to the question he is really asking.

If the reason the question is being asked is a a legal one, PM me as I researched this issue nd advised successfully a fellow rally driver in 2004 who had fallen foul of an overzealous PC who disapproved of his competion car being driven on the road.

The NI version is available online and contains most of the same wording, but with different numbering.
