parking ticket in Florida?
Discussion
I spent most of December in Florida on business. I parked at the hotel I was in, the places I was working ( a shipyard, and 2 engineering workshops ). I went to a mall once or twice. I really do not remamber parking anywhere other than those places, and they all had free parking.
Today I have recieved a letter from the rental company saying they are charging my credit card an admin fee for having to give my name address to the local authoritys regarding a toll violation. They have enclosed a parking ticket reminder. I definately did not get a ticket, i.e. a piece of paper on the windscreen or anything. Do they do that over there, or could I have received "a ticket" without knowing it? On the reminder there is no info except the issue date ( which was when I had the car ), the reg number, and the ticket number. In the letter from the hire company, it sais to take no action now as the authority will contact me directly. On the reminder, it sais the longer I leave it, the higher the late payment charge will be.
So do I dispute it, and ask for prove etc.
Or do I ignore it, and any following letters? Is the urban myth that the outcome of these will ne that immigration will not let back into the USA ever again actually true?
The other thing that annoys me is the date of the reminder is the begining of Jan, but the date the hire company has written to me is 3 days ago.

A mate of mine got a speeding ticket in the states the day before he flew out. Left without paying it and a few weeks later got a summons from the US stating he must pay up or he would be arrested if he ever went there again. The cost was a couple of hundred dollars compared to the original $30 ticket.
It's a bit difficult to argue it's not your ticket if it was issued during your hire period (which you signed), may just have to bite the bullet. I would get a copy of the ticket faxed over so at least you know in your own mind it's not a mistake.

I don't really want to leave it, as I will almost certainly have to go back again at some point in my life.
The thing is, I never came back to the car to find a ticket on the windscreen etc, so I am surprised. What happened to the original ticket? Also, I cannot remember parking at all other than where stated above.
When I get back to the office I will dig out the paper work just to check the reg number.

Did you go on a toll road without paying? I know the minor exits from the turnpikes do not have any barriers on the (automated) toll booths, so you could drive straight through in theory!!
(But they take your picture and send you a fine
)
So they should ... if you drive the wrong way onto them! - Streaky (But they take your picture and send you a fine
)I heard some time ago from ex-colleagues in the USA, that scammers were targeting foreign renters with this sort of thing. One story was that garage attendants would note the number of cars driven by people with non-American accents and pass these on to the scammers. They would then wait a couple of weeks before sending in a claim for an unpaid ticket. The rental companies don't check, they just take the money and pass it along. Another story was that rental clerks were involved. If true, this might be such a scam - Streaky
Just a quick note to say it had a happy ending.
The parking ticket office had mixed up an "I" with "1" on the reg plate. They have dropped the ticket.
They have also agreed to write to the rental asking them to refund the admin charge for passing my details on.
I wonder whether that would happen over here?
