The government is set to tackle the problem of motorists who drive without the proper documentation by introducing automatic £100 fines for uninsured drivers — regardless of whether they are actually driving their vehicle at the time.
Surely they have to drive to commit the offence?

Should be uninsured owners, I guess.

isn't that the new law they are trying to bring in that if you own a car, that it has to be insured whether its on the road or not?

Why? Is this another punish the law abiding motorist to look like we are doing something about the rest policy?
Seems stupid to require that a car be insured if it isn't in use. Those who drive without insurance aren't going to give a toss anyway, so it won't make a lot of difference.

The government knows it cannot go on banning ever more drivers lest it risk mass disobedience.
Course it can, as long as it's banning people for the right reasons. article nearly said:
...drivers without insurance will be fined even if they're not driving
Errr, you what? People who aren't driving? Fined for not doing something that has never been a legal requirement (whilst not driving)?? Que? Is it just me??
basically it's this ........ if your cars tax expires and it's not declared SORN and you have no insurance policy in force (all checkable by computer) then you'll get nicked for no insurance as well because if it's not on a SORN declaration then it's deemed to be still on the road
it's simple really if your cars going to be off the road SORN it and you'll have no problem

That's all well and good - except for the presumption of guilt, which I (and I believe the English Lgal System) thoroughly disagree with. IF plod thinks my car is untaxed and on the road, they should come knock on the door and ask to see it. I *may* have forgotten to SORN, but that doesn't mean it's still on the road.
