What a great idea! Though I would have set the thresholds a little lower myself. Anyway, signed.

Yes there is here....

Don't forget though everyone, if the petition in my original post receives good support, then the road charging petition (which time's out in two weeks and will be swept under the carpet) may get dragged back into the public eye after 5th february 2008, when the above petition time's out.

If this one gets ignored, I'm going to set up a petition for petitions for petitions not to be ignored not to be ignored. Hopefully that one won't be ignored. But if it is, I'll set up a petition for petitions for petitions....zzzzzzzzzz

I just wonder how many people have to sign a petition before someone takes notice of it. To ignore a petition signed by 1M people rather devalues the petition industry.
Mind you can anyone recall a petition to Downing Street that was successful?

Don't you believe it! Since when has BLiar listened to any of his Ministers ... especially one from so lowly a department? Further, Ministers are attacking the basis of the petition - focusing on the "absurdity of the continual monitoring argument". An authority (sorry, forget which one, but a Minister - actually, I think it was the 'Roads Minister' himself!) said yesterday: "We'll set out the case for road-pricing when the petition closes." Read this as: let's look at the generalities of the arguments set out by petitioners, then traduce them (i.e. "spin" ). Also, wait for (some of) the petitioners to be described as "reactionary", "members of the BNP", "active in militant motoring pressure groups (like PH)", "eco-terrorists". Some organisation (like BRAKE)will announce the slogan: "Think of the planet" and the pro-pricing lobby will jump on that band-wagon - Streaky

PS - No 10 is to email everyone who signed the petition. Hmm. When you signed, did you explicitly opt in for your email to be used for marketing? If not, No 10 may be in danger of breaching the DPA! Downing St also said it would "engage" with Peter Roberts. Perhaps he should avoid walking in the fields for a while.

Edited to remove the unintentional smiley caused by the quote close parenthesis problem that Ted still hasn't fixed, and to insert comments about Roads Minister and emails from No 10 - S

Depends how desperate the government are & how central to their policies it is to get their wishes enacted. If it's high on their priorities I'd say a lot more than 1 million personally.

Yes entrenched government policy is hard to shift, you'll have to keep knocking & with greater volume.

But seriously (all banghead aside)

If over a million people have actually bothered to sign this petition, there is going to be a greater undercurrent that agree but either don't know how to sign it, don't have access or are just stupid and 'haven't got round to it'. It is atthe end of the day, these people that are needed to really get the numbers up.

I feel this governmnent is going to be very silly to ignore such large public opinion.

I still feel a coup d'etat is the way forward.

I'm sure MI6 are now monitoring me and I have a red tick next to my name on some 'potential troublemaker' list, but to hell with them.
